The film opens with the pairing of KK and Bhama, who understand their hardships and responsibilities. Bhama must repay her mother's debt to a vicious brother-in-law, ₹20,000, under threat of harm. To protect Bhama, KK arranges a dowry-free marriage and the wedding is celebrated grandly.

Right after the wedding, KK works as an art director in Bombay while Bhama is a stenographer in Kochi, forcing them to endure long separation. Their positions are tied to Sridhar Rao's textile business, which offers relatively high salaries. The distance tests their bond as they pursue opportunities apart from one another.

Sridhar Rao declares that a key job will go to only one family member, raising the stakes for KK and Bhama. They decide to present a phony story—KK is a bachelor and Bhama is the sole breadwinner whose husband is paralyzed—to secure the position. The ruse is aimed at stabilizing their families’ finances.

Sridhar Rao's wife and daughter Vasundhara (Vasu) are introduced, with Vasu being lively and self-assured. She bonds with KK, appreciating his charm and frankness, which makes Bhama feel envious and unsettled. The growing tension foreshadows later conflicts in their arrangement.

Giri, Bhama's brother-in-law, lusts for Bhama and harasses her, which angers KK and tests his loyalty. Bhama grows anxious as Giri's schemes threaten her dignity. KK's protectiveness deepens as he tries to shield her from further trouble.

During a staff picnic, Giri manipulates events by appointing Bhama as Vasu's dance teacher and accommodating her in their outhouse. This proximity to Vasu's life complicates Bhama's feelings and KK's position. The deceptive setup plants seeds for further conflict.

Vasu presses KK to help with learning art on weekends, and the couple plays along to maintain their facade for job security. KK participates in the ruse to protect their livelihoods, while Bhama grows wary of the growing deceit. The double life strains their relationship further.

Giri takes Bhama's photos and pressures KK to design using them, which KK refuses. In a furious escalation, Giri injures KK as Bhama watches in tears. The crisis pushes Bhama toward a breaking point and tests their commitment to the deception.

Seshu arrives, and the group attends a Christmas party. Bhama trickily confronts Giri and exposes him before Sridhar Rao's wife, but she falters and retreats home, overwhelmed by the tension. The incident marks a pivotal turning point in the mounting crisis.

That night, Bhama spots KK and Vasu driving back from the midnight party and misreads the scene as infidelity. She resolves to reveal the truth the next day, setting up a crucial confrontation between the couple. The doubt threatens to derail their fragile arrangement.

On the eve of Sashtipurthi, Sridhar Rao's 60th anniversary, KK pleads with Bhama to stay calm and explains the financial necessity. They forge a soap actor, Krishnaji, to pose as Bhama's husband, securing funds and stability for the families. The community celebrates while the truth remains buried in the plan.

During the Sashtipurthi, Bhama overhears Seshu and Vasu discussing KK's virtue and sacrifice, which triggers a transformation in her heart. She begins to see KK's true intent and his care for her and their families. Remorse follows as Bhama realizes the depth of his commitment.

KK consoles Bhama and explains that the deception was meant to purify her heart and save their marriage. They seek forgiveness from Sridhar Rao, who accepts responsibility for his earlier misjudgments and pays ₹100,000 as compensation. The film closes with KK and Bhama continuing their married life in happiness.
