On the 1932 voyage aboard the passenger ship S.S. Arcturus, Crusher McKay runs a tight, high‑powered ship that his crew both admires and fears. The ship’s doctor Doc Tony Craig has signed on in Shanghai for the San Francisco–bound leg, hoping to be near his former sweetheart, Ann Grayson. The tension between duty and romance threads through the voyage from the start: Crusher is drawn to Ann, but his bold, bumbling courtship soon clashes with the doctor’s own feelings, sparking a rivalry that colors every move aboard.

As the Arcturus cuts through the night, a sick Chinese stowaway is found hidden below decks, dying from Asiatic cholera. Doc acts quickly, injecting the crew and setting up sanitation procedures to stem the spread, but Crusher remains contemptuous of the measures. He is even tricked into taking the injection and, in defiance, orders a loud blowout in the engineering crew’s mess. The first cholera case, Britches, collapses there, signaling that the outbreak is not just a nuisance but a dangerous, spreading threat. To contain the crisis, the doors to the decks above are bolted shut, so passengers are kept unaware of the trouble brewing below, while the disease quietly moves through the stokers down in the holds.

The crew strains to keep the ship running as the illness advances. Ann and Doc work to isolate the infected and prevent a full collapse of morale, but the tragedy deepens: the dead stokers, their mattresses and blankets, are fed into the steamship’s boilers as the ship’s grim rationing of space and resources continues. A desperate man tries to escape his fate by crawling from the hold to a porthole and plunging into the sea. Crusher falls ill himself, and for a time his men fear he has joined the dead, only to discover that he and the surviving patients are slowly recovering. In a moment of panic and mutiny, Deadeye and some others tempt fate with burning coal, but Crusher returns and subdues the uprising, restoring order and signaling his stubborn resolve to keep the ship from breaking apart.

Even as the crisis begins to ease, the ship’s dynamics shift: Crusher, now on the road to recovery, steels himself for a confrontation with his own pride while still clinging to a sense of control. He faces the fact that Ann and Doc have rekindled their romance and are planning a future together—likely a marriage and a move to Guatemala for Doc’s next assignment. Crusher tactfully saves face by telling Ann that he’s not seeking marriage and that his plans are to move on, even musing about visiting Portland to pursue a new relationship there. The Arcturus finally reaches San Francisco, two hours ahead of schedule, and port authorities peer into the surface calm, unaware of the peril that stayed hidden below.

With the quarantine lifted, the passengers are released, and the ship’s emotional currents settle into a quiet aftermath: Ann and Doc prepare for their life together, while Crusher confronts the reality that his hard-edged leadership and his rivalrous pride may have cost him something valuable. The narrative hints at a future where each man must reconcile duty, desire, and what it means to lead a crew at sea. Amid this shifting tide, a small, wry moment lands like a final punchline: the ship’s bird, Chicken, receives a last, knowing line about love and luck, a last wink at a voyage that tested all hands.
