The cinematic canvas unfolds in 1944, as Sergeant Eldson (Bokeen Woodbine) leads a squad of paratroopers on a perilous mission to take down a Nazi radio tower hidden within a German church. Their journey takes a horrifying turn when an enemy attack forces the surviving soldiers to leap from their burning plane, plunging into the depths of the water below, desperately trying to reach safety.

Private Ed Boyce (Jovan Adepo) has a heart-wrenching reunion with Corporal Ford (Wyatt Russell), only to be struck by tragedy when he witnesses the brutal execution of Sergeant Eldson at the hands of Nazi soldiers. The shock of this loss weighs heavily on Boyce, but Ford serves as a source of comfort as they regroup and try to locate fellow soldiers Tibbet (John Magaro), Chase (Iain De Caestecker), and Dawson (Jacob Anderson). Their collective grief brings them closer together as they press on with their mission.

As they journey through perilously rugged landscapes, misfortune strikes again when Dawson inadvertently triggers a landmine, resulting in his tragic fate. The survivors retreat into the woods, where they cross paths with Chloe (Mathilde Ollivier), a French woman walking alone. Determined to avoid detection, Ford orders the team to follow her as she reluctantly agrees to guide them to her home, where she cares for her ailing Aunt Simone (Eva Magyar) and her young brother Paul (Gianny Taufer).

As the soldiers seek refuge in the attic, Chloe confronts a neighbor who has become suspicious of her late-night activities, yet her efforts prove in vain. The village soon falls under German patrols, forcing Chloe to lead the American soldiers back home. Paul’s innocent curiosity disrupts their tense environment, creating friction with Tibbet before he and Chase venture out to scout their meeting point. Outside, a grim execution plays out, leaving Chloe haunted by her parents’ tragic fate.

As Boyce recovers from a bullet wound thanks to Chloe’s care, she shares her heartbreaking family history. A flicker of joy emerges as Boyce bonds with Paul, but this fragile peace shatters when Captain Wafner (Pilou Asbæk) arrives. In a desperate moment, Boyce intervenes to protect Chloe from Wafner’s advance, leaving Wafner subdued in the attic but still a threat.

Sent on a crucial mission to find their designated rendezvous point, Boyce encounters the foreboding silhouette of the church—a harbinger of dread. As he narrowly evades detection, he stumbles into a grim reality inside the church—a horrific laboratory filled with remnants of twisted medical experiments. Overwhelmed by the macabre details, he comes across a severed woman’s head, its grim expression a chilling reminder of the atrocities committed there. Moreover, he discovers an almost lifeless creature locked away, a testament to the horrors that have transpired.

Just as despair threatens to take hold, Dr. Schmidt (Erich Redman), the orchestrator of this nightmare, arrives. In a stroke of fate, Boyce rescues Rosenfeld (Dominic Applewhite), another paratrooper, from imminent death by extracting a massive needle embedded in him. As they escape, Boyce secures a syringe filled with an experimental serum, igniting a desperate quest to thwart Schmidt’s vile ambitions.

Rejoining the others, Boyce reveals the serum to Ford, who is determined to discover its significance via Wafner. When pressed for answers, Wafner remains obstinately silent, igniting Ford’s fury and resulting in explosive violence. Boyce recounts his eerie encounter within the church, prompting Ford to strategize an assault on the tower that houses Schmidt’s wicked enterprise.

Amid the tension, Chase ascends to free Wafner, but finds himself ambushed, leading to a fatal confrontation. His comrades rush to aid him, where Boyce takes matters into his own hands, injecting Chase with the ominous serum. Unexpectedly, Chase’s life is restored, but he undergoes a horrifying metamorphosis that turns him into a dangerous force. As he succumbs to chaos, Ford is forced to act decisively, forcing the once-comrade to be put down, leaving an unsettling calm in Wafner’s gaze.

As the survivors regroup, they face a new crisis: Wafner has escaped with Paul as his captive. Ford decides to prioritize the tower’s destruction over the boy’s rescue, even though Boyce and Chloe are resolute in their intention to save Paul.

In Wafner’s return to the laboratory, he encounters Schmidt, switching roles as captor and captive. Injecting himself with the serum, Wafner transforms into a monstrous entity bent on destruction.

The Americans concoct a plan to breach the church, using a German soldier as explosive bait. As they press forward amidst chaos, Boyce, Ford, and Chloe are confronted with escalating violence. In the climax of this dark tale, the battle crescendos, resulting in a horrifying showdown with the mutated Wafner, leading to desperate actions that define the harrowing stakes they face.

The explosive climax results in a bitter victory. The American fighters flee as the laboratory collapses around them, and Boyce is left bearing the tragic news of Ford’s sacrifice, who chose to erase the lab’s malignant secrets forever.
