DC Showcase: Sgt. Rock

In this gripping story, Sgt. Rock awakens in a makeshift field hospital, several months after his Easy Company unit was tragically wiped out during a brutal battle. Having survived his injuries, he is soon assigned a critical mission by Lt. Matthew Shrieve — to locate and capture a female German Nazi scientist who possesses dangerous knowledge. To accomplish this, Sgt. Rock teams up with a covert squad called the Creature Commandos, an elite and unconventional group of soldiers made up of extraordinary beings: Pvt. Warren Griffith, a wolfman hybrid; Sgt. Vincent Velcoro, a vampire; and Pvt. Elliot “Lucky” Taylor, a Frankenstein-like creature. Their goal is to infiltrate a heavily guarded castle where the scientist is believed to be hiding.

The team moves stealthily through the castle, navigating tight corridors and hidden chambers until they locate the scientist and her assistant. However, their operation is abruptly interrupted when they are ambushed by Karl Urban’s character, the Iron Major, who quickly reveals himself as their formidable adversary. During the conflict, the scientist activates a switch linked to a generator, sparking concerns about a doomsday weapon rumored to be housed within the facility. Pvt. Elliot “Lucky” Taylor cleverly destroys the generator, but this sets off a chain of terrifying events. The chamber doors burst open, unleashing the reanimated corpses of Rock’s fallen squad members, who have been revived as undead soldiers controlled by unknown dark forces.

Despite fierce efforts from the Creature Commandos—who manage to slay five of the zombies—they realize the true purpose of the generator: to revive Bulldozer, a powerful and destructive friend of Sgt. Rock, who was previously presumed dead. Both William Salyers and the others struggle to contain Bulldozer’s relentless rampage, as his strength rivals that of Pvt. Taylor. In a tense and desperate moment, Sgt. Rock seizes his chance, wielding his Thompson submachine gun to take down Bulldozer once and for all, ending his destructive path.

As the laboratory begins to burn from the chaos, the Iron Major and the scientists attempt to escape. However, Sgt. Rock and the Creature Commandos stand their ground, cornering the villains. The Iron Major, gloating, claims that Sgt. Rock will not shoot him because orders are to capture him alive — aiming to create an army of the dead for the Nazis. Recognizing the danger, Sgt. Rock decisively orders the Commandos to eliminate the Iron Major and the scientists and to destroy their research by setting the castle ablaze.

Once outside, Sgt. Rock gathers his team and prepares to speak. He criticizes Lt. Shrieve for the disregard and lack of transparency in their mission briefing. Declaring his commitment to prevent such reckless deployments in the future, Rock vows that the Creature Commandos will no longer be sent into such perilous situations without proper support and information. As he delivers this promise, he gazes back at the burning ruins of the castle, knowing that this act of destruction has given the Easy Company a fitting final send-off — a proper cremation for fallen comrades.

Through this intense tale of military heroism, supernatural threats, and moral resolve, the story underscores the sacrifices made and the tough decisions taken in the face of unimaginable danger.
