In 1989, against the backdrop of apartheid, three teenage friends, Otelo, Ntwe, and New Year, escape to a beachside paradise. Here, they meet Mandla Modise, a legendary wave rider, who introduces them to the exhilarating world of surfing, providing a stark contrast to the violence they face in their township.

As the trio begins to surf, their initial fears of the ocean turn into excitement and joy. For Otelo, the sensation of 'flying on water' becomes a powerful symbol of freedom, drawing him into a passion he can't resist.

A chance encounter with Kurt Struely, an older white man, proves pivotal for the three friends. Recognizing their potential, he invites them to his home, where they witness professional surfers, sparking dreams of a future in competitive surfing.

With each surf competition, Otelo showcases his growing skills, gradually overshadowing Mandla's talents. This burgeoning success leads to a deepening of Mandla's jealousy, creating a rift within their friendship.
