The battalion's journey takes a tragic turn when they are captured by the revolutionary Juan Cortina. He views the Americans as enemies, complicating the already fraught situation amid the rising tensions between the U.S. and Mexico.

After being wounded in the thigh during the conflict, Riley is cared for by Marta, Cortina’s enigmatic partner. This moment deepens the story, intertwining personal relationships with the unfolding war.

Facing the threat of war, Cortina and his men must decide whether to join the Mexican Army under Riley's command. They ultimately choose to enlist, forming their own battalion amid the chaos.

Riley is promoted to captain, taking charge of an influx of Irish immigrant soldiers who defect to the Mexican side. This new leadership galvanized the troops, who are now fighting under a shared banner.
