When Mak-soon went missing during the chaos of the Hungnam Evacuation, Deok-soo's father became desperate to find her. In that moment, he made the agonizing decision to entrust Deok-soo with the responsibility of guiding his mother and two younger siblings to safety in Busan. The father chose to stay behind searching for Mak-soon, believing this was the only way his family would survive.

With limited options and responsibilities to his family, Deok-soo enlisted in the Korean army during the turbulent 1970s, a decision that would lead him to the Vietnam War.

This moment marks another sacrifice of personal dreams for family duty.

While serving in Vietnam, Deok-soo was caught between his duties as a soldier and the needs of his family back home. He endured the horrors of combat and was injured when enemy fire struck his leg. He returned to Korea bearing both physical and emotional scars from the experience, a constant reminder of the sacrifices he made.

In 1983, an elderly man from Deok-soo's hometown appeared on a television program about Korean reunification, claiming to be Deok-soo's long-lost father. This unexpected claim led to the televised reunion and eventually helped Deok-soo discover the truth about his family's past, though the film leaves ambiguous whether this man was truly his father.

This televised reunion triggers the chain of events that leads to finding Mak-soon.

Through the 1983 television program about reunification, Deok-soo and Mak-soon learned about their biological connection via an American woman who had been adopted during the Korean War.
