What Happens at the End of Nocturnal?

How Nocturnal (2024) ends, what the final scene means, which earlier moments set it up and how to read the ending if the film leaves it open. The full ending explained, with every spoiler.

The story comes to its climax when Bae Min‑tae finally learns who really killed his brother Seok‑tae. All the clues that pointed to Moon‑young—her disappearance, the drained accounts, the novel Nocturnal that mirrors her alleged crime—turn out to be a red herring. It is the mob boss Chang‑mo who ordered the hit, fearing Seok‑tae’s botched drug deal with a powerful CEO’s son would attract unwanted attention. Chang‑mo not only murders Seok‑tae in cold blood, he forces Moon‑young to clean up the scene and then plans to eliminate her as well, sending his enforcer Byung‑gu after her.

Armed with this truth, Min‑tae races to Haenam, where Moon‑young is about to flee the country. The police, the writer Mr Kang, and Chang‑mo’s men all converge on the same hotel, but Min‑tae’s relentless drive and his reputation for taking on any number of opponents give him the edge. He battles through Chang‑mo’s thugs, and in a tense, gritty showdown confronts the boss himself. After a brutal fight, Chang‑mo accepts his fate, and Min‑tae delivers his revenge, leaving the mob leader dead.

The film ends with Min‑tae walking away from the carnage, phone in hand, dialing the CEO whose son’s overdose set the whole tragedy in motion. He doesn’t say what he will do, but the implication is clear: the cycle of vengeance will continue, and Min‑tae is determined not to let anyone escape accountability.

Nocturnal Ending: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about the ending of Nocturnal (2024): what the final scene means, how the twist works, what happens to each character and how to read the ending. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Who really killed Seok-tae in Nocturnal?

The mob boss Chang-mo is the one who actually ordered and carried out Seok-tae's murder. All the evidence that pointed to Moon-young was a deliberate red herring, she was framed by Chang-mo, who needed a scapegoat for the crime.

Foreshadowing: Earlier clues about Moon-young's disappearance and the novel mirroring her alleged crime were designed to mislead both Min-tae and the audience.

  • seok-tae murder
  • chang-mo
  • real killer
  • moon-young framed
Q2

Why did Chang-mo order Seok-tae's murder?

Chang-mo killed Seok-tae because he feared the botched drug deal involving a powerful CEO's son would attract unwanted police attention to his operation. Seok-tae had become a liability.

Foreshadowing: The subplot involving the CEO's son and the drug deal was introduced early but its connection to Seok-tae's death only becomes clear at the climax.

  • chang-mo motive
  • drug deal
  • ceo son
  • seok-tae death reason
Q3

Was Moon-young involved in Seok-tae's death?

No, Moon-young was completely innocent. Chang-mo forced her to clean up the crime scene after Seok-tae was murdered, then planned to eliminate her as well to keep his involvement hidden. She was a victim being set up as the fall guy.

Foreshadowing: The novel *Nocturnal* found in her possession was planted to create a false connection to the murder.

  • moon-young innocent
  • framed
  • not killer
  • novel evidence
Q4

Does Min-tae kill Chang-mo in the final showdown?

Yes, Min-tae kills Chang-mo in a brutal fight at the hotel in Haenam. After battling through Chang-mo’s thugs, Min-tae confronts the mob boss directly, and Chang-mo accepts his fate before Min-tae delivers the killing blow.

Foreshadowing: Min-tae’s reputation for taking on any number of opponents foreshadowed his ability to face Chang-mo alone.

  • min-tae revenge
  • chang-mo death
  • final fight
  • showdown
Q5

What happens to Moon-young at the end of Nocturnal?

Moon-young was attempting to flee the country from Haenam when Min-tae and all the other parties converge on the hotel. The ending does not explicitly show her fate, but with Chang-mo dead, the threat against her ends, though she has already suffered greatly as his victim.

Foreshadowing: Her desperate attempt to escape reflects the earlier hints that she was being hunted by Chang-mo’s men.

  • moon-young fate
  • haenam
  • fleeing country
  • victim
Q6

Who is the CEO Min-tae calls at the end?

The CEO is the powerful businessman whose son’s drug overdose triggered the entire chain of events. Min-tae’s brother Seok-tae was involved in a botched drug deal with this CEO’s son, which is what drew Chang-mo’s attention and led to Seok-tae’s murder.

Foreshadowing: The drug deal subplot involving the CEO's son was established earlier but its true significance surfaces in the final moments.

  • ceo
  • drug deal
  • seok-tae
  • vengeance target
  • phone call
Q7

What does the ending imply about the cycle of revenge?

The ending suggests the cycle of vengeance will continue. Min-tae walks away from killing Chang-mo and immediately dials the CEO, showing his determination to hold everyone accountable, not just the mob boss. The implication is that Min-tae will keep pursuing those responsible, no matter how far the chain of blame extends.

  • cycle of vengeance

Q8
