In 2008, Toronto-based musicians Matt Johnson and Jay McCarrol come together to form Nirvanna the Band with a clear dream: land a live show at the iconic Rivoli. What starts as a hopeful collaboration soon spirals into a cycle of failed schemes and stubborn ambition, as the pair chase a breakthrough that feels increasingly out of reach. The duo’s dynamic is a mix of camaraderie, tension, and stubborn belief in their own vision, even as reality keeps slipping further away.
Seventeen years pass, and the road to a big break remains blocked. Matt suggests a bold publicity stunt—the Seventh Inning Skydive—dropping from the CN Tower into the SkyDome during a Blue Jays game in a bid to put Nirvanna the Band on the map. The plan is thrilling on paper, but it collapses when the SkyDome roof unexpectedly closes mid-dive, a misstep that amplifies Jay’s sense that Matt’s grand schemes are more risk than reward. The setback deepens their rift, as Jay grows increasingly wary of the risks that come with chasing fame.
In an attempt to pivot, Jay secretly books an open mic slot in Ottawa, hoping to gain momentum without relying on Matt’s bigger stunts. Meanwhile, Matt, convinced they can still sway the Rivoli and win over audiences by playing time travelers, envisions a fictional route to stardom. He outfits their RV with flashy “time travel” gear inspired by Back to the Future, unknowingly triggering a cascade of consequences. A spilled bottle of Orbitz—an accident with outsized meaning—unintentionally activates the machine when combined with the RV’s improvised setup.
The next morning, Jay tries to head to Ottawa, only to discover that Matt is still inside the RV. Before long, the two are inexplicably transported back to 2008. They quickly realize the Orbitz bottle was the key to their temporal leap, and they scramble to secure another bottle from their younger selves’ apartment. The plan unfolds with close calls and tight moments as they narrowly dodge discovery, and an unplanned exchange between the older Jay and the younger Matt begins to unsettle the older Jay’s decision to leave the band. The confession arrives: Jay had once considered leaving to go solo; this revelation spurs Matt to alter their 2008 plans, instructing their younger selves not to play the Rivoli.
The journey returns them to 2025, where Jay has ascended to extraordinary musical heights, while Matt finds himself as a drummer in a Jay McCarrol cover act. The reunion is uneasy and charged—Matt confronts Jay at a concert, but Jay denies any knowledge of the time machine. A sly move follows as Jay slips away and destroys the last Orbitz bottle, a symbolic moment that signals the fragile balance of their altered timelines.
Without Matt, Jay’s fame begins to hollow him out. In a misguided bid for friendship within his new band, he accidentally shoots and kills one of the members, turning himself into a fugitive. Desperate to fix what’s been broken, Jay returns to Matt and clings to the pretense of being an alternate version of himself, offering to help repair the timeline. His true motive remains hidden: he wants only to reverse the fallout from the scandal.
Back in the timeline without Orbitz, Matt recalls the night the CN Tower lightning struck—the moment their skydiving plan first failed. They attempt to power the time circuits by connecting a cable from the tower to a power box at an intersection. As authorities close in on Jay, the connection is severed, and the cable wisps away from the tower. Matt bravely reattaches it, but the cable proves too short to reach the power box. In a final, selfless act, Matt powers the machine with his own body, sacrificing himself to save the timeline.
Jay witnesses Matt’s sacrifice and uses it as motivation to rewrite the past. He travels back to 2008 and changes Matt’s earlier message, encouraging their younger selves to perform at the Rivoli after all. In the present, Matt—unaware of the previous timeline’s events—again suggests the skydiving stunt, while Jay quietly proposes starting the plan earlier to avoid the same complications, hinting at a future where their choices might finally align with the dream they’ve chased for so long.
