Tang Sanzang, Wen Zhang, embarks on a tale that unfolds before the famed Journey to the West, when the world is still figuring out where mercy ends and monsters begin. A quiet riverside village is disrupted by a strange aquatic menace, and a Taoist priest stakes his claim that the creature is the demon everyone fears. The villagers, swayed by fear and the priest’s provocation, lash out at the lone demon hunter who argues otherwise. The real threat resurfaces with a deadly, almost clinical ease, slaughtering many villagers, while Sanzang frees himself and, with the survivors, manages to beach the creature only to watch it shed its monstrous disguise and become a man.

In the aftermath, Sanzang unpacks a book of nursery rhymes and begins to sing to the demon, a gesture that unsettles the onlookers who have already craved a quick, brutal conclusion. The demon attacks, and a renowned demon hunter named Miss Duan, Shu Qi, arrives to capture the beast, turning it into a puppet. Sanzang speaks of a more humane path—an approach his master champions—yet Duan scoffs at such sentimentality. The lessons clash, and the two hunters part ways with a bitter undertone. When Sanzang seeks guidance, he confronts his own sense of insufficiency, and the wise, quiet voice of his master—Master Nameless, Cheng Si-Han—reaffirms a humanist philosophy that guides him to pursue enlightenment rather than vengeance.

A parallel danger slips into a serene haven: a couple enters an empty restaurant, only to meet a pig demon in disguise who ends their lives. Sanzang returns to the same place later, discovering it filled with the living corpses of the victims and the demon’s eerie, nine-toothed rake. Duan bursts in and fights the pig demon, capturing it again to turn it into a puppet. The demon bursts free from the bag, transforming into a giant boar that collapses the building around them. They retreat, but the encounter sows something unexpected in Duan—an attraction she misreads as love, while Sanzang remains focused on the path ahead and rejects romantic entanglements that could derail his quest for nirvana.

The master’s advice nudges Sanzang toward a radical solution: to tame the Monkey King, Sun Wukong—the creature imprisoned by Buddha itself. The plan sets in motion when a gang—who have captured Duan— targets Sanzang, only to reveal themselves as accomplices in a larger plot. Duan’s attempt to press her feelings into a physical trap backfires, and Sanzang is imprisoned after refusing her advances. The pig demon resurfaces, injuring Duan, as rival demon-hunters close in. Duan, furious and wounded, shatters Sanzang’s nursery rhyme book and tears away from the road, leaving him to carry on alone.

Days pass, and Sanzang discovers a hidden cave beneath a lotus garden, where the Monkey King has been trapped for five hundred years. The imprisoned trickster, a formidable force, urges Sanzang to bait the demon with a dancer. Duan volunteers, stepping into a human display of grace, and the Monkey King expertly subdues the pig demon, allowing the puppets to pass from danger to possibility. Duan presents both the fish and pig puppets to Sanzang and offers him her golden ringed weapon as an engagement token, but he declines. She leaves, returning the nursery rhyme book—reassembled, though imperfectly, as she is illiterate.

The Monkey King then uses a ruse to coax Sanzang into unlocking his prison, and chaos erupts as the demon hunter bursts free. As Sanzang prays to Buddha, the avenger rips the hair from his head in a wrathful display. Three rival demon hunters surge forward, but Monkey King shows his prowess by killing them with effortless ease. Duan returns, defending Sanzang, yet the Monkey King mortally wounds her. In a moment of vulnerability, Sanzang confesses love, but the power of the demon’s rage is too strong, and the Monkey King vaporizes her body.

In the wake of this tragedy, Sanzang studies the nursery rhyme book again and realizes Duan has rewoven its words into the voice of the Buddha Sutra. He calls upon Buddha for aid, and the divine palm defeats Monkey King in a display of cosmic authority. To seal the matter, Sanzang places Duan’s golden ring on the Monkey King, and the ring becomes a restrictive headband that tames his power.

With the lesson carved into his heart, Sanzang tells his master that his suffering over Duan’s loss has become the seed of enlightenment. He is then sent on a path to the west, toward India, to seek the Buddhist sutras of Leiyin Temple. The film closes with the Water Demon, Pig Demon, and Monkey King humbled and transformed into three humans—Sha Wujing, Zhu Bajie, and Sun Wukong—who accompany him on the long journey across the desert. As the trio hikes toward their destiny, Sanzang glances out at the vast world and glimpses the image of Duan, a haunting reminder of the passions and losses that tempered his enlightenment.
