Two patients, Martin Brest Til Schweiger and Rudi Wurlitzer Jan Josef Liefers, learn they each have untreatable diseases with only a short time left. Over a few drinks, Martin explains that in heaven they will spend all their time talking about how beautiful the sea will be, and he realizes the urgency of showing Rudi the world before time runs out.

Drunk and still in their pajamas, they steal a baby blue Mercedes-Benz W113 classic roadster from a crime boss, Curtiz [Rutger Hauer], and set out on a final mission to see the sea. A gun found in the glove compartment adds a dangerous edge as they rob several small shops along the way, and they uncover a stash worth a million deutsche marks in the car’s trunk.

As their journey nears its end, they are chased by both the police and rival gangsters. A tense stand-off unfolds on a remote country road, with police units on one side and criminals on the other, guns raised and tempers flaring. The chase ends in a dramatic shoot-out, forcing Martin and Rudi to bolt through a corn field in a desperate bid for freedom.

Martin then buys a pink Cadillac—the same model Elvis Presley gave to his mother—to fulfill his dream of giving his mom a special gift. The gesture is tied to his plan to reconnect with those he cares about, and Cornelia Froboess (Martin’s Mother) lends a human warmth to the moment, even as danger lingers.

Ambushed near Martin’s mother’s house, they barely escape a lethal trap and are rushed to the hospital in an ambulance with Rudi by Martin’s side. En route, the two hijack the vehicle again to push toward the sea, staying stubbornly focused on their shared quest.

On the way to the ocean they stop at a brothel, where Rudi dreams of sharing an experience with two women at once. Coincidentally, the brothel is owned by the very boss whose money they had found earlier, pulling them deeper into the chase. The gangsters close in, and the boss demands the money back. Martin explains that the money has already been spent and mailed to random recipients, a revelation that drives the criminal mastermind to a breaking point. When the tension peaks, Curtiz makes a decisive appearance, and the line that lingers is: > Then you better run, before you run out of time.

The journey finally ends at the shore. Martin reaches the sandy beach and collapses, dead. Rudi sits beside his friend, facing the endless sea and watching the waves roll in, the quest having taken them exactly where they wanted to be—and leaving them with a quiet, unsettled future to face.
