Lee Ja-Sung is an undercover police officer who has spent eight years embedded within Goldmoon International, the largest corporate crime syndicate in South Korea. Operating under constant threat of exposure, he walks a fine line between his policing duties and the ruthless world he’s infiltrated. Chief Kang promises to reassign him to an overseas police post, a lifeline that could free him from the syndicate’s grip, but the clock never seems to move in his favor. When Ja-Sung hints at quitting, Chief Kang ominously threatens to reveal his true identity to Goldmoon, sealing a fate of potential, painful death.
The sudden death of Goldmoon’s chairman triggers a fierce struggle for succession. Jung Chung is backed by the Northmoon clan with Chinese roots, while Lee Joong-gu commands the Jaebum faction. Chief Kang engineers a brutal chess game, pitting them against each other in hopes they will cripple one another, thereby paving the way for the weaker, seemingly pliable Jang Su-Ki to assume control. Su-Ki holds the title of vice president in name, but real power remains elusive, and Kang sees him as an expendable figure who can be manipulated.
Kang’s strategy involves a calculated blackmail. He pressures Jung to expose Joong-gu by leaking damning evidence, offering a pardon for Jung’s own crimes in return. Jung agrees, but the plan backfires when Kang betrays him and Jung is arrested. Enraged, Joong-gu’s men strike back with brutal force, attempting to silence Jung for good. In the chaos, they storm Lee Ja-Sung’s home; his wife survives an attempt on her life only to suffer a miscarriage from the shock, adding a personal tragedy to the political treachery.
Shattered and terrified of what awaits him if released, Ja-Sung pleads with Chief Kang to reassign him and let him disappear. Kang refuses, and in a cruel move, erases Ja-Sung’s police dossier to force him to remain entangled with Goldmoon’s dirty business. Grief-stricken yet driven, Ja-Sung visits Jung in the hospital. Before Jung dies, he urges Ja-Sung to decide where his loyalty truly lies. Jung senses the undercover truth about Ja-Sung but chooses to protect his friend’s cover, hinting at an unspoken bond that survives even in death.
With Jung removed, Ja-Sung seizes his chance. He consolidates Jung’s faction, wins over Su-Ki’s followers, and strengthens his grip on Goldmoon’s power structure. When Su-Ki tries to have him executed, Su-Ki’s own men turn on him, killing Su-Ki instead. At Ja-Sung’s direction, his subordinates eliminate Chief Kang, Police Director Ko, and Joong-gu, clearing the path for Ja-Sung to ascend. The result is a chilling transformation: Ja-Sung’s past undercover identity remains hidden from the world, while he quietly ascends to become the new chairman of Goldmoon.
The narrative then shifts to a six-year flashback to the pair’s early days. As young, small-time criminals, Ja-Sung and Jung form a formidable partnership. Their loyalty and teamwork help them topple a rival gang, and in the wake of their victory, Ja-Sung’s first genuine, unguarded smile signals the birth of a dangerous, enduring camaraderie that foreshadows the iron will he will wield as his ascent continues.
