During the summer of 1981 in Hutchinson, Kansas, two eight-year-old Little League teammates, Neil McCormick and Brian Lackey, begin a season filled with profound experiences. As they enjoy the camaraderie of Little League baseball, their lives are about to change in significant and traumatic ways.

Neil deals with the negligence of his single mother, which fosters feelings of abandonment. These challenges make him susceptible to misinterpretation of affection, particularly from adults around him.

Neil falls victim to sexual abuse at the hands of their Little League coach, an event that profoundly impacts his understanding of love and trust. The coach’s actions remain hidden, as he ultimately disappears by the end of the summer.

Amidst the turmoil, Brian recalls a rainy game that transitioned into a hazy memory of finding himself in the crawl space of his house. He experiences a lost five-hour interval that complicates his understanding of his own past.

As time passes, Brian's dreams evolve, and he begins to visualize another boy in his dreams wearing a Little League uniform. These visions deepen his confusion about the traumatic events of their childhood.

At the age of 18, Brian meets Avalyn Friesen, who shares his fascination with alien abduction narratives. Their shared experiences create a bond, but when Brian panics at her advances, he cuts off all contact, compounding his feelings of isolation.
