Cheung Lei-Fong works in a bridal gown rental shop in Golden Plaza, Prince Edward, and she is in the eighth year of her relationship with Edward Yan, who runs his wedding photography business in the same mall. They rent a flat above the mall, and while they plan to move out of the area, Edward’s mother, Mrs. Yan, negotiates with the owner to buy the flat, leaving Fong feeling unsettled.
Fong soon discovers a troubling detail about her past: the marriage certificate of a divorcee bears a remark, and she grows anxious about the secret she’s kept for years. Ten years ago, after severing ties with her parents, she was introduced by a friend, Yee, to an agent and entered into a sham marriage with a mainlander. The next day, the marriage registration office tells her she is still legally married to Yang Shuwei, because the agent failed to file for divorce on her behalf. At a loss, Fong turns to Yee for help, only to be led to a public proposal party. Before she can respond, Edward places the engagement ring on her finger, and she declines to hold a wedding banquet for fear that her secret will be exposed.
Fong posts a tracing notice for Yang, and he finally appears. He agrees to jointly file for divorce, but only if Fong helps him apply for a one-way permit that would let him emigrate to New York City. Fong would rather wait for unilateral divorce to take effect, but Edward’s mother decides to stage a grand banquet the following year, leaving Fong with little choice. She agrees to fake daily life photos with Yang, who slips a heap of cash into her hands. Yang also notices Edward bombarding Fong with instant messages and questions her decision to give up her freedom.
Edward soon discovers a copy of her marriage record in her handbag and confronts her. Fong confesses to her past and expresses deep regrets. The couple quarrels briefly but soon makes up. The next morning, Fong must travel to Fuzhou for a face-to-face interview, and Edward tries to stop her, but she goes anyway. There she encounters Yang’s girlfriend and learns that she is pregnant, prompting Yang to rethink his migration plan. Keeping mobile data off during the journey, Fong returns to Hong Kong with a changed outlook on Edward and their life together.
Back home, a serious quarrel erupts after a message from Yang, and Fong explains her dissatisfaction with the wedding arrangements and his mother’s meddling. Yang abandons his migration plan and agrees to file for divorce immediately. Fong resigns from her job to prepare for a new life, only to find that her future mother-in-law has released her turtle. She rushes to a nearby pond to recover the pet and voices her frustration about losing her freedom, while Edward gently assures her they can still be themselves.
Early the next morning, Fong leaves Edward a sticky note warning of his bad habit and boards a bus to Fuzhou, where she returns the cash to Yang. When she turns on mobile data, she ignores Edward’s messages and orders a long table of her own choosing.
Overall, the film follows a woman at a crossroads, weighing personal freedom against family expectations, as she navigates love, secrets from the past, and the path toward a future she can call her own.
