Bong Vhong Navarro has liked Winona Toni Gonzaga for as long as anyone in the tenement can remember, but he never finds the courage to pursue her. Winona seems to be showing interest in Bong, yet he remains too unaware to notice it. One day, in the tenement Bong is managing for his aunt Lolit Vangie Labalan, he receives the final notes from the recently deceased neighborhood
Yet when he opens Winona’s envelope, fear overtakes him. He knows the family legend that all the women in Winona’s bloodline die before 25. The list is chilling: her mother died after giving birth at 24, her older brother died at 21, her maternal aunt disappeared during Martial Law at 23, her grandmother died during World War II at 20, her great-grandmother died of drowning at 18, her great-great-grandmother perished from malaria at 22, and an ancestor was said to have been devoured by a dinosaur at 19. Bong understands that Winona’s 25th birthday is approaching, and this letter might confirm the curse. When he opens the letter and reads that Winona has lupus and will die soon, a vow forms in him: he will make Winona’s last days bright, perfect, and full of love.
What follows is a long montage of small, intimate moments designed to keep the romance alive: Bong fills each day with care, attention, and happiness, and the two grow closer, their bond deepening into love. Winona’s warmth and Bong’s devotion begin to mend both of them, and they lean into a future they hadn’t dared imagine.
But when Winona turns 25, she unexpectedly does not die. She discovers the hospital letter herself and learns that her earlier results were negative. Enraged that Bong kept the truth from her, she confronts him. Bong’s attempt to apologize is heartbreakingly sincere, but Winona rejects him, and in the aftermath he faints and is hospitalized. During this tense period, Winona’s concern rises, even as a new truth starts to surface: Bong is now revealed to have a rare lung disease of his own.
At first, Bong struggles with the double blow—his illness and the secret he kept from Winona—but he finds a grim configuration of hope: if Winona truly dies, he could die with her. Yet the hopeful moment is short-lived, because the doctors reveal that Bong’s prognosis is serious too. In a cruel twist, Winona learns that Bong is dying, not the other way around, and she is devastated by the weight of that revelation.
Despite the turmoil, the couple’s bond endures in spirit. In a final, poignant turn, Winona chooses to propose to Bong, signaling a desire to commit to one another for whatever time they have left. Tragedy strikes once more as they die together in a car accident soon after their marriage, sealing a love that endured even as it faced an inexorable fate.
