The tires of a baby-blue ‘53 Cadillac Coupe de Ville convertible screech down the bustling streets of New York City, with its occupants resolutely looking ahead. The stunning yet unpredictable Ann Devereaux, played by Renée Zellweger, has just walked out on her unfaithful husband, Dan Devereaux, portrayed by Kevin Bacon, who is a society bandleader. Determined for a fresh start, she embarks on a road trip with her teenage sons, George and Robbie, played by Logan Lerman and Mark Rendall respectively, as they seek a wealthy new partner to fill the void.
Despite the backdrop of 1953, Ann’s belief in her enduring charms clashes with the reality of a world where eligible bachelors seem fewer and far between. Her optimism never wanes; however, the journey reveals numerous challenges—a string of new schools for her boys, increasingly modest accommodations, and a parade of romantic escapades that chip away at their initial excitement. Yet, Ann’s unwavering spirit shines through, matched by her flamboyant older son Robbie, who dreams of the spotlight, and the cynical yet observant George, an aspiring writer keenly taking notes on their misadventures.
As the engine purrs and miles accumulate, their adventure oscillates from whimsical to hair-raising, from deeply poignant moments to laughable escapades. Ann’s impulsive decisions lead them to meet an array of quirky characters, revealing a narrow path between thrills and trepidation. Ultimately, through this rollercoaster journey, George uncovers the resilience, pride, and underlying love that define his mother beyond her seemingly selfish demeanor. In turn, Ann carves out a new future for herself and her sons, one that defies their original expectations.
Their sometimes comedic, often touching cross-country quest becomes a tale of discovery, self-reliance, and familial bonds as they navigate the unexpected twists and turns of life on the road. Renée Zellweger enchants as the mother determined to forge a new path as she navigates through life with her children, all while seeking a suitable socialite to support their family in this rich comedy inspired by actor George Hamilton’s childhood memories.
