My Father is a Hero

Wei, a police officer of the People's Republic of China, is assigned to infiltrate a group of Hong Kong terrorists. His worry over his sick wife and his eight-year-old son Ku Kung strains their family life as the mission looms. The assignment sets the stage for a tense balance between duty and family.

Wei teams with Darkie, a former gang member, and they escape from prison to meet Po in Hong Kong. The pair join Po's operation and begin to integrate into the gang. This marks Wei's transition from undercover officer to an inside man within a criminal plot.

Wei is formally inducted into Po's gang and participates in an arms deal with foreign criminals. The deal escalates the operation and cements Wei's double life. He begins to manipulate events from inside, setting the stage for the planned thefts.

To carry out the plan, Wei volunteers to wear a bomb-laden vest, turning himself into the ultimate decoy. He uses a ruse to steal the bombs and ensures the money remains in Po's hands. The dangerous gambit keeps Wei close to the action while masking his true intent.

The operation attracts off-duty detective Anne Fong, whose boyfriend Inspector Cheng is taken hostage. Fong volunteers as a hostage exchange and tries to foil the plan, even attempting suicide; Wei intervenes by disabling the vehicle and escaping.

Using a photo of Wei taken before the arms deal, Fong heads to Beijing to uncover his true identity. The pursuit links the two sides of the story and sets up future confrontations. Wei remains uncertain about how close Fong is to discovering him.

Back in Beijing, Ku is teased by school bullies until Fong befriends the Wei family. She learns more about Wei and deduces his role as a police officer. The budding friendship ties Fong more closely to Ku and the Wei household.

Mrs. Wei suffers a fatal asthma attack and dies; Fong delivers a final letter to Wei and is asked to take care of Ku. The family tragedy deepens the emotional stakes and complicates Wei's mission. Fong's loyalty to the Wei family deepens her involvement with Ku.

Anne and Ku plan to travel to Hong Kong by speed boat, hoping to escape the pressures of the case. Cheng files a missing person report on Ku, drawing media attention and straining the relationship between Anne and Cheng. The public spectacle further entwines the fates of Wei, Fong, and Ku.

Ku notices a police cruiser in front of Fong's apartment and escapes, only to be picked up by Po. Meanwhile, Wei attempts to sneak into Fong's apartment to retrieve Ku but is confronted by Fong. The rift between Wei and Fong grows as both pursue Ku in different directions.

Po orders six bombs to be planted at an antique auction; Darkie shields Ku and is mortally wounded, dying after warning Ku about Po's scheme and giving him a phone to contact Wei. Ku tries to inform Wei but the phone's battery dies. In the ensuing chaos, Wei and Ku confront Po, Fong shoots Po aboard a helicopter, and they escape as the bombs explode, reuniting Wei, Fong, and Ku.
