Gage Dobson is a young boy navigating a tough life: he endures constant bullying at school, his divorced mother, Cathy Dobson, is dating a creep named Dr. Elliott Carlisle, and the girl he hero-wypes for, Andrea Kurtz, doesn’t seem to notice him. His only real ally is the eccentric, often dismissed Professor Cruikshank, a man many dismiss as a crackpot. The world around him feels unkind, leaving Gage to cope with whispered insults, uneasy nerves, and a longing for something—or someone—to alter the course of his days.

One day, while wandering into an abandoned mine, Gage encounters a strange creature that calls itself Munchie, a being with magical powers and a mystery he can’t quite explain. Munchie follows him home, and what begins as a curious encounter quickly sows new possibilities for a boy who has felt invisible. Munchie is eager to help, and he promises to use his strange abilities to fix some of the problems in Gage’s life, though it’s not immediately clear what “help” will really mean in practice.

At first, Munchie’s powers seem to tilt the scale in Gage’s favor. He helps Gage stand up to bullies and push back against the daily insults that have worn him down. But the creature’s idea of help is messy and unpredictable—so much so that it also starts to embarrass the school’s strict principal, Principal Thornton. The principal’s threats of expulsion hang over Gage, and frustration grows as the line between assistance and trouble blurs. In a moment of desperation, Gage brings Munchie to the wise—but cranky—Cruikshank, who pulls back the curtain on the mystery. Cruikshank reveals that Munchie is no ordinary creature: he is an eternal being who has existed in every major civilization since time began. This revelation reframes everything Gage thought he knew about friendship, power, and the consequences of meddling with forces he doesn’t fully understand.

Reassured, Gage eventually entrusts Munchie to Cruikshank’s care for a while, but the creature soon returns to his home and, with a renewed sense of mischief, stages a gigantic party while Cathy and Carlisle are out on a date. The event proves to be a surprising success, drawing in the very principal who had threatened expulsion. The party becomes a turning point, giving Gage a chance to talk with Andrea, and slowly, the two teens begin to see a future where they might connect in a way that feels real and hopeful.

Yet the date night for Cathy and Carlisle takes a dark turn. Carlisle’s sexist attitudes clash with Cathy’s independence, and when they return home, they discover the party in full swing. Carlisle snoops around and eventually finds Munchie sleeping, seizing the creature to take to his office for “experiments.” With Andrea’s support and Cruikshank’s guidance, Gage must face the consequences of letting Munchie roam free and step into danger. A high-stakes chase unfolds, culminating in a dramatic crash as Carlisle’s reckless pursuit ends with him crashing into a donut shop and being arrested by nearby cops.

With Carlisle removed from the scene, Munchie departs to join Cruikshank on a foreign expedition, but not before promising Gage that they’ll see each other again someday. The boy who once felt invisible now carries a new sense of possibility, tempered by the knowledge that magical beings—and the people who believe in them—can change the course of a life.
