Gage Dobson endures constant bullying at school and a tense home life after his mother Cathy begins dating Dr. Elliot Carlisle. He longs for Andrea's attention, but she doesn't know he exists. His only real ally is Professor Cruikshank, dismissed by others as a crackpot.

While exploring an abandoned mine, Gage stumbles upon a strange creature calling itself Munchie. Startled, he tries to flee, but the creature speaks with eerie confidence. Munchie claims to have magical powers and a mind of its own.
