Denni Mobama, a passionate chef and owner of a quaint African restaurant in Brooklyn, has dedicated the past six years to bringing his fiancée, Janet Matashane, to New York. Together, they aim to honor their Basotho heritage by celebrating a traditional wedding ceremony, during which Janet is given the name of their yet-to-be-born son, George.
With a spirit fueled by hope and excitement, Janet plunges into her new role as Ma George, filling her days with household chores, culinary delights, and visits to Denni at his restaurant. She spends her time window shopping at the Fulton Mall, where she reunites with an old friend, Kendra, whose sophisticated lifestyle captivates her. Every evening, Janet finds herself glued to the TV, patiently awaiting Denni’s return while cherishing the dream of starting a family.
As time passes and her efforts to conceive George meet with disappointment, Janet’s sense of isolation grows. In a move to reclaim her identity, she secretly starts working to meet others who share her immigrant experience. This newfound independence ignites a spark within her that she never expected. However, her journey takes a heavy toll when she struggles to bear the child they long for, leading to a harsh ultimatum from Ma Denni: as per their customs, she must grant her husband permission to take another wife.
Caught in a fierce internal battle between her rich cultural heritage and her evolving life in America, Janet finds herself desperately trying to navigate this heartbreaking situation. With her marriage hanging in the balance, she is determined to do whatever it takes to give Denni the son he yearns for, facing every challenge head-on in her quest for love and family.
