Mother, Couch (2024) Plot Summary & Ending Explained

Mother, Couch uses surreal and symbolic imagery to explore David’s process of coming to terms with his mother’s death. Throughout the film, the furniture store becomes a metaphor for memory, family history, and unresolved emotions. The woman sitting on the couch represents the mother, her refusal to leave symbolizing her attachment to her past and her memories. David’s journey is about accepting her choices and her absence, which is ultimately represented by the act of releasing the couch into the water, letting it carry her away.

The discovery of the hidden dresser filled with old letters signifies David’s reconciliation with his desire to connect with his siblings and understand his family history. These letters, which he once hoped would bring him closer, were never actually sent or received, mirroring the emotional barrier his mother created by keeping the siblings apart. By unlocking the dresser and finding these letters, David realizes that his longing for a familial connection was always present, even if hidden or suppressed.
