Mortal Kombat Legends: Snow Blind

After the defeat of Shao Kahn in Mortal Kombat, Earthrealm has undergone a drastic transformation, now largely devastated by a relentless wave of undead revenants that have turned it into a barren wasteland scattered with isolated cities. In this weakened state, the once-powerful Black Dragon clan—comprising members like Kira, Kobra, Ferra/Torr, Drahmin, Kabal, Erron Black, No Face, Dairou, Tremor, and Jarek—has aggressively taken control of these territories. Their ruthless leader, Kano, proclaims himself the ruler of this chaos, consolidating power through fear and violence. Meanwhile, an aged and humble Kuai Liang, formerly known as Sub-Zero, lives a quiet life as a farmer, cut off from his former glory.

His peaceful existence is shattered when members of the Black Dragon clan—Kira, Kobra, and Kabal—launch a brutal assault on him, stealing supplies from his farm and venturing into a nearby untouched city. That city becomes the battleground where a young, confident warrior named Kenshi Takahashi—who is briefly described with the full name by the characters—stands his ground. Despite their initial threat, Kenshi’s combat skills prove formidable as he defeats Kira, Kobra, and Kabal in a fierce fight and, surprisingly, spares their lives, allowing them to retreat. These enemies later return, accompanied by the powerful Tremor and the sinister sorcerer Shang Tsung, who has grown older yet more treacherous.

When Kenshi introduces himself fully and his surname Takahashi catches the attention of Shang Tsung, the sorcerer’s obsession sparks a deeper interest. During a confrontation, Kenshi is defeated by Tremor, but Shang Tsung intervenes to prevent his execution, sensing potential in the young warrior. Disguised under the alias “Song,” Shang Tsung tells Kenshi about a legendary and mystical sword called “Sento” that possesses the power to defeat the Black Dragon. Driven by this promise, Kenshi ventures into a treacherous desert where he discovers the Well of Souls, a source of immense energy.

As he opens the well, energy bursts out, blinding Kenshi before Shang Tsung—bearing ambitions of rejuvenation—absorbs the power and appears renewed with a younger, more sinister appearance. Seizing the moment, Shang Tsung throws Kenshi into the well, leaving him to perish. Yet, Kenshi’s telepathic connection to the enchanted sword “Sento” enables him to hear its voice and ultimately escape the well’s deadly grasp, armed with new resolve.

Shang Tsung’s plans continue to unfold as he launches an attack on Kano and his Black Dragon henchmen, killing several of them before facing his own downfall. Despite his efforts, Kano—who had anticipated Shang Tsung’s betrayal—manages to kill the sorcerer after a brutal fight. The cybernetically-enhanced Kano reveals his cunning manipulation and hints at a grander scheme involving the timeline itself, especially through the use of Kronika’s Hourglass.

Kuai Liang finds Kenshi wandering in the desert, battered but alive. He takes the young warrior under his wing and trains him, using his own knowledge to bolster Kenshi’s senses and skills. During their time together, Kuai Liang reveals he was once among those who faced the undead threat and, in a desperate attempt to end the curse, killed everyone—including his own clan and innocent civilians—in an icy storm. This tragic event haunted him, leading him to swear never to use his powers again.

Tensions reach a boiling point when Kano seizes control of another city, and Kenshi advocates for helping the local people—an idea that Kuai Liang firmly opposes, leading to a fierce confrontation. Kuai Liang gains the upper hand, offering Kenshi a final chance to leave the conflict behind and resume a normal life. However, Kenshi, determined to fight, chooses to stay and joins the battle. His decision leads to his capture after killing more Black Dragon members, but Kuai Liang, now embracing his past as Sub-Zero, retrieves his old identity and joins forces with him.

Together, they storm the city to rescue Kenshi, who is being tortured by Kano. The two legend-bound warriors eliminate the remaining Black Dragon members, and in a dramatic climax, they decapitate Kano—though he survives and races to a chamber housing Kronika’s Hourglass. This artifact, which Kano had previously used to create an alternate timeline in which the revenant invasion was unleashed, holds devastating power. Kano’s attempt to use the Hourglass to rewrite history is thwarted by Kano, who is killed by Kuai Liang before he can erase Kenshi’s existence entirely. The chamber’s self-destruct mechanism seals off the evil and prevents further tampering.

As part of their journey’s conclusion, Kuai Liang promises Scorpion to take him to the Netherrealm if he ever uses his powers again—symbolizing a pact to prevent future chaos. With his mission achieved, Kuai Liang departs, passing on his role as protector of Earthrealm and taking Kenshi as the new successor of the Lin Kuei, entrusted with safeguarding peace and balance. This story emphasizes themes of redemption, sacrifice, and the enduring fight between chaos and order, showcasing the complex history and ongoing struggles of these legendary fighters.
