Dr. Amarnath Gill visits Darjeeling to prepare for his medical exams and meets Chanda, the healer’s daughter. They fall in love, sharing dreams of a future together. He promises to return after his exams.

Amarnath must return to Calcutta for his final exams and leaves Chanda with a pledge to come back. The parted lovers exchange a hopeful vow that is never fulfilled. The separation sets their destinies on divergent paths.

Twenty-five years pass and Amarnath returns as a wealthy man to search for Chanda and her father. He confronts a changed world and unresolved questions about their fates. The mission to reconnect with his past becomes his new purpose.

Amarnath learns Harihar Thapa has died and that Chanda was married to a crippled old man. He also discovers Chanda bore a daughter, Kajli, who later became insane and died. The revelations deepen the tragedy surrounding his loved ones.

Amarnath locates Kajli, Chanda’s daughter, and is struck by how closely she resembles her mother. He realizes Kajli carries the shadow of Chanda’s life within her. He takes Kajli into his care.

Kajli had been molested by her mother's brother-in-law and ended up in a brothel. Amarnath buys her from the brothel and brings her home, hoping to reform her into a refined woman. He believes this act can atone for his earlier absence and for Chanda’s suffering.

Kajli grows attached to Amarnath and begins to love him, not understanding his indirect role in her mother’s ruin. She clings to him as a paternal figure and protector. Her feelings complicate the memory of Chanda.

One night, Kajli is reminded of who she is and returns to her old revealing clothes, prompting Amarnath to cast her out. The rift exposes the fragility of their fragile bond.

Kajli returns to the brothel, and the madam convinces her that Amarnath loves her and deserves a respectable life, prompting her to return to him. The cycle between past and present sharpens the drama.

Kajli comes back to Amarnath and awakens him in the night, attempting to embrace him. Amarnath still sees her as Chanda’s replica and is torn between duty and desire.

Amarnath reveals to Kajli that he is the man his mother waited for and that his past drove her to madness. Kajli is shocked by the confession and the history it uncovers.

Overwhelmed by the truth, Kajli runs away from their home. She feels betrayed and exposed by the past that binds them, creating a widening distance between them.

The next morning, Amarnath packs to return home, and in the woods he encounters Kajli holding a childhood photo of him. She stands with resolve, eyes blazing with unresolved anger.

Kajli accuses him of causing her mother’s downfall and her own life in the brothel, while Amarnath explains his quest for forgiveness and asks if she can forgive him and be his daughter. The emotional clash tests their bonds.

They drive off together toward home, seeking a chance at a new life and a fragile reconciliation. The journey signals a tentative new beginning for their family.
