On a cargo ship departing Marseille, the crew spots two stowaways: Manon Lescaut, Cécile Aubry and Robert Dégrieux, Michel Auclair. The ship’s captain, Henri Vilbert, threatens to throw them overboard unless Robert can explain his presence. To win mercy, Robert begins the tale that led to this moment, a story that threads between war-torn past and precarious present.

The tale rewinds to 1944, a Normandy village caught in the heavy shadow of Liberation. Allied bombs rain down as fear and suspicion run high. In the crypt of a ruined church, villagers accuse Manon of collaborating with the Nazis, and they menace her with humiliation and death. Robert, a French Resistance fighter assigned to guard her, intervenes, rescuing her and winning her wary trust.

The two then travel by train toward Paris, sharing intimate moments that deepen their fragile bond. In the city, they reconnect with Manon’s brother Léon Lescaut, Serge Reggiani, a black market operator who has his own sense of how to survive in upheaval. They settle into a rundown hotel, yet Manon’s yearning for luxury clashes with their austere surroundings. Léon pushes her to monetize her beauty, and he introduces her to Madame Agnes, Gabrielle Fontan, who runs a high-class brothel.

Manon begins working as a prostitute to afford fine clothes and jewelry, while Robert—doing various menial jobs—does not fully see the depths of her world at first. When he discovers her secret after stumbling upon a client, jealousy tests their bond. She promises to stop, but the lure of wealth proves too powerful to resist.

Seeking an escape from their cycle, Robert steals money from his employer, and the couple flees to the countryside. They buy a small house and enjoy a brief spell of happiness, even planning to marry. Yet Léon finds them and persuades Manon to return to Paris, dangling the promise of greater riches.

Back in the city, Manon resumes her lavish dual life—prostitution and involvement with the black market—while Robert spirals into despair, gambling away what they have. His possessive love weighs on her, and she and Léon hatch a plan to lock him in a room so she can slip away with a wealthy American suitor.

Robert breaks free and confronts them. In the ensuing violence, he kills Léon. Now fugitives, Manon and Robert sell her jewels to fund their escape, and they connect with an underground network that smuggles Jewish refugees, boarding the cargo ship as part of a clandestine migration.

Back on the vessel, the captain’s sympathy is tempered by duty as authorities close in. Robert seizes a guard’s gun, and the couple makes a break for it, joining the refugees as they disembark in Palestine. They trek across a desert under a scorching sun, with little water and no relief in sight. Manon grows weaker, and she collapses, dying in Robert’s arms. He buries her body in the sand and lies down beside the grave, the horizon stretching endlessly ahead as his future remains uncertain.
