Mama's Boy

Eccentric and quirky, Jeffrey Mannus is a 29-year-old bookstore clerk still residing with his mother, Jan. After his father’s passing during his childhood, he has remained closely attached to her. This comfortable setup, however, faces disruption when Jan becomes enamored with Mert Rosenbloom, a motivational speaker whose charm captivates her after attending one of his uplifting talks. Jeffrey sees Mert’s entrance as an unwelcome invasion of his territory, and he is unwilling to let this relationship overshadow his world.

In an effort to find solace, Jeffrey forms a bond with Nora Flannagan, a barista and aspiring singer-songwriter. They connect over their shared cynical view of life, offering each other a small escape from their troubles. Determined to reveal Mert’s true nature, Jeffrey employs a computer shop worker to gather incriminating information about him. However, when Mert arrives to smooth things over with Jeffrey, the plan backfires, leading to a subtle war between the two men.

As Mert encourages Jan to relocate Jeffrey to the basement of their home, Jeffrey seeks refuge at one of Nora’s gigs to escape the new couple’s intimacy. Their initial frostiness melts away after an apology, leading to a budding friendship. Mert, clearly threatened, insists on hosting a barbecue where the tension rises; Mert throws insults at Jeffrey while making veiled jabs at Nora’s dedication to her music career.

The rivalry intensifies, marked by pranks and jabs until both men decide to get engaged, concurrently plotting to sell the house. In a bout of desperation, Jeffrey interrupts Nora while she records a demo, asking her for help on a sensitive lead in Arizona regarding Mert’s estranged daughter, Maya Sinclair. Nora’s fury later surfaces when she discovers that Jeffrey used her for his own agenda, further straining their friendship.

In an unexpected turn of events, Jeffrey begins to undergo a transformation within himself, confronting his identity. But before this metamorphosis fully unfolds, tensions reach a boiling point, resulting in a fistfight between Jeffrey and Mert in Jan’s home. This altercation forces Jan to reevaluate her relationship with Mert, ultimately leading to their breakup, to Jeffrey’s delight. However, it’s short-lived when Jan turns on him, kicking him out of the house.

Finding himself homeless and facing the consequences of his actions, Jeffrey experiences a low point that includes a comical arrest for public urination. Fortunately, his former boss, Seymour, comes to his aid, paying his bail and providing him shelter. With newfound clarity, Jeffrey devises a plan to reunite Jan and Mert, and after he successfully mends their relationship, he races to catch Nora’s bus as she prepares to leave for college. With determination, he parks his car in the middle of the road and holds up a radio blaring one of her favorite songs, reconnecting with her just in time for reconciliation. As they drive off into the sunset, Jeffrey’s journey of personal growth begins to unfold.
