Magic in the Moonlight

In Berlin, Germany, 1928, we find ourselves immersed in the world of Stanley Crawford (Colin Firth), a British illusionist who performs under the alias Wei Ling Soo, a supposed Chinese magician. His captivating tricks, which include making an elephant vanish and a mesmerizing sarcophagus act, enchant the audiences, despite his harsh demeanor towards those working around him. When his old friend, fellow illusionist Howard Burkan (Simon McBurney), approaches him with a curious proposition over drinks, Stanley is intrigued yet skeptical.

Howard invites Stanley on a journey to the French Riviera to investigate a young woman claiming to possess psychic abilities, Sophie Baker (played by Emma Stone), who has mesmerized the wealthy Catledge family, particularly their enamored son Brice (Hamish Linklater). Stanley brings along his fiancée Olivia (Catherine McCormack), a skeptic like him. Upon reaching the luxurious Côte d’Azur, they are introduced to the Catledge family, where Stanley’s doubt quickly surfaces against the spellbinding performances of Sophie, who gives the impression of having mystical insights.

During the evening’s séance, Sophie attempts to connect with the spirit world, creating an air of suspense when a candle inexplicably floats in mid-air, captivating even the undeniable skeptic, Stanley. Her references to Stanley’s past ignite a spark of uncertainty within him. As the story progresses, he finds himself unable to shake off her influence, despite maintaining his initial beliefs about the absence of genuine magic.

A string of interactions ensues, filled with moments of joy and exploration, including a charming outing where Stanley witnesses Sophie’s delight in the pleasures of life. Their dynamic evolves through laughter, heartfelt conversations, and unexpected connections, especially during a poignant moment when Stanley’s car breaks down, leading them to seek shelter in a nostalgic observatory under the stars.

As the narrative unfolds, Stanley grapples with rising feelings for Sophie, which casts doubt on his relationship with Olivia. Sophie, meanwhile, tries to win Brice’s heart, causing tension and confusion for Stanley. After a setback involving a family crisis, Stanley is faced with the harsh reality of his own beliefs crumbling. Upon discovering that Sophie is a fraud, the tension culminates in a confrontation where Stanley, hurt and betrayed, refuses her plea for forgiveness.

Yet, as time passes and Stanley’s heart begins to heal, he realizes that his feelings for Sophie eclipsed those he had for Olivia. In a twist of fate, he finds Sophie again, only to face her commitment to Brice, who has proposed to her. In a desperate attempt to reclaim what he feels is lost, Stanley proposes to Sophie, but she walks away, leaving him to contemplate the weight of missed opportunities.

In the end, Stanley reconciles with Howard, understanding the mechanics of their deception. When Stanley visits Vanessa (Eileen Atkins) once more to express his regret, a moment of divine chance lands him back near Sophie. With a knock representing consent from the universe, he asks her once more if she will marry him, leading to a heartfelt reunion filled with unresolved feelings and the promise of love.
