In 1928 Berlin, Stanley Crawford, a British illusionist, performs captivating acts under the alias Wei Ling Soo. His performances, including making an elephant vanish, mesmerize audiences even though he maintains a harsh demeanor towards his crew.

After a show, Stanley meets his old friend, fellow magician Howard Burkan, at a local bar. Howard suggests that Stanley join him on a trip to the French Riviera to investigate a young woman who claims to have psychic abilities.

Intrigued by the proposition, Stanley agrees to travel to the French Riviera along with his fiancée Olivia. The trip marks the beginning of a tug-of-war between skepticism and the allure of something supernatural.
