What Happens in Madeleine: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Madeleine (2003) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Ji-suk is a Korean Language & Literature major who dreams of becoming a writer, and delivers newspapers part-time.

When he goes to a hair salon to have his long hair cut, a charming woman calls him by name. She is none other than Hee-jin, his classmate in junior high school.

Dreaming of becoming a hair designer, Hee-jin is a senior hair designer at the salon despite her young age. They are both drawn to each other, Ji-suk to Hee-jin's beauty, and Hee-jin to Ji-suk's purity.

Their paths cross by chance a few more times and the two grow closer. Finally, Hee-jin suggests a “one-month romance.”

> Neither one of us can say 'Let's break up' before the month is up! After a month, we part ways grandly! What do you think? Fun, huh?

Ji-suk is caught off guard. Seeing this, Hee-jin smiles at him sweetly, and the pair begin to navigate a relationship that is as unexpected as it is enchanting.

Ji-suk, who ponders everything seriously, and Hee-jin, who is filled with cheerful playfulness, discover that they have 0% in common yet are pulled toward a world neither of them expected to understand. Their romance grows into something far more splendid than either of them anticipated, built on curiosity, laughter, and a willingness to learn from one another.

But one day, Ji-suk's first love, Sung-hae, shows up. Majoring in film, Sung-hae is the lead singer of a band and very cool, and his presence unsettles the delicate balance of their budding bond. Hee-jin becomes jealous over Sung-hae and the two butt heads for the first time since the month began, testing the durability of their agreement and their feelings.

And to make matters worse, Hee-jin faces a life-changing decision when she discovers she is pregnant with her ex-boyfriend's child and wants to keep the baby. This revelation leads her to tell Ji-suk that Sung-hae also loved him during their junior years, adding layers of complexity to an already fragile trust.

Despite the mounting challenges, Ji-suk does not give up on Hee-jin. He stands by her, supports her through the difficult choices, and together they weather the emotional storms, slowly finding a path toward a hopeful life you can root for. Their story explores how two very different people can still find harmony, resilience, and a lasting connection when they choose to stay together through the uncertainties of love.

Madeleine Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about Madeleine (2003): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why does Hee-jin suggest a one-month romance?

Hee-jin proposes the one-month romance because she wants to explore their connection without the pressure of a serious commitment. She's a playful, confident character who creates a game-like framework where neither can end things prematurely. This allows them to enjoy their time together while testing whether their feelings can sustain something real. The rule also protects her from getting hurt too deeply, since she knows they seem very different on the surface.

Foreshadowing: Early in their reunion, Hee-jin already shows her bold personality by calling Ji-suk by name before he even recognizes her.

  • one month romance
  • hee-jin proposal
  • dating agreement
Q2

Why does Hee-jin reveal that Sung-hae liked Ji-suk in junior high?

Hee-jin tells Ji-suk about Sung-hae's past feelings as a way to level the playing field after learning about his first love's return. With her own pregnancy complicating things, she shares this information to create understanding and trust. The revelation also serves to show that Sung-hae isn't simply a rival, there's a shared history that connects them all. It's her attempt to be honest about the complicated emotional landscape they're navigating.

Foreshadowing: Sung-hae's sudden reappearance at the reunion directly triggers Hee-jin's insecurity and this subsequent confession.

  • sung-hae junior high
  • first love revelation
  • trust
Q3

Why does Ji-suk stay with Hee-jin after learning about the pregnancy?

Ji-suk stays because his feelings for Hee-jin have grown beyond the initial playful arrangement into genuine love. Rather than viewing the pregnancy as a dealbreaker, he sees it as a challenge they can face together. His character is portrayed as sincere and thoughtful, someone who takes relationships seriously. By staying, he demonstrates that his commitment isn't conditional on circumstances being perfect.

Foreshadowing: From their first meetings, Ji-suk is drawn to Hee-jin's authenticity and finds himself more invested than he expected.

  • pregnancy support
  • ji-suk commitment
  • standing by her
Q4

How did Ji-suk and Sung-hae know each other?

Ji-suk and Sung-hae were acquainted during their junior high school years, where Sung-hae developed feelings for him. She was a cool, talented student who later became the lead singer of a band while majoring in film. When Sung-hae reappears at the reunion, it becomes clear their past connection still lingers, creating tension with Hee-jin. The revelation that she loved him back then adds another layer to the love triangle.

Foreshadowing: The story establishes early that Ji-suk had a first love before Hee-jin entered his life again.

  • first love
  • junior high
  • sung-hae past
Q5

Why does Hee-jin become jealous of Sung-hae?

Hee-jin becomes jealous because Sung-hae represents Ji-suk's past, a connection that predates their own. Even though their month-long romance started as a game, Hee-jin has developed real feelings for Ji-suk. Sung-hae's cool, confident demeanor as a band singer and film major intensifies Hee-jin's insecurity. The fact that Ji-suk's first love is returning creates fear that she might lose him to someone from his history.

Foreshadowing: Their one-month romance has been running smoothly until Sung-hae's appearance disrupts the peaceful dynamic.

  • jealousy
  • love triangle
  • emotional conflict
Q6

Why does Hee-jin decide to keep the baby?

Hee-jin decides to keep the baby because she wants to be a mother despite the pregnancy being from a past relationship. This choice reflects her strong sense of self and willingness to embrace life-changing responsibilities. Rather than seeing it as an obstacle, she views the child as part of her future. Her decision forces both her and Ji-suk to confront what they truly want from their relationship beyond the initial month-long agreement.

Foreshadowing: Hee-jin has consistently shown confidence in making unconventional life choices, from becoming a senior designer young to proposing the romance.

  • pregnancy decision
  • keeping baby
  • life choice
Q7

What happens if one of them says 'let's break up' during the month?

The one-month romance agreement explicitly states neither can say 'let's break up' before the month ends, this is the core rule of their arrangement. If either person breaks this promise, they would be the ones ending things prematurely. The setup creates a structured timeframe where they must work through conflicts rather than running away at the first sign of trouble. It's designed to test whether their connection can survive normal relationship challenges.

Foreshadowing: The rule becomes crucial when Sung-hae returns and Hee-jin expects Ji-suk to honor his commitment despite the complication.

  • break up rule
  • one month agreement
  • commitment
Q8

How do Hee-jin and Ji-suk's relationship survive all the obstacles?

Their relationship survives because both characters choose to prioritize each other despite the complications. Ji-suk proves his devotion by staying through the pregnancy revelation and supporting Hee-jin's decisions. Hee-jin, in turn, is honest about her circumstances and doesn't hide important truths. They communicate through their difficulties rather than giving up, slowly building trust. The steady pacing of the film shows them learning to balance personal dreams with shared responsibilities.

Foreshadowing: Early on, they discover they can teach each other new things, establishing a foundation of mutual growth.

  • overcoming obstacles
  • mutual support
  • staying together
Q9

What causes Hee-jin and Ji-suk's first real argument?

Their first major argument occurs when Sung-hae returns and Hee-jin's jealousy surfaces. The carefree nature of their month-long romance is interrupted by this blast from Ji-suk's past. Hee-jin feels sidelined as Sung-hae and Ji-suk reconnect, and the tension explodes into their first genuine conflict. This tests whether their relationship can handle external pressures and whether their feelings run deeper than curiosity and amusement.

Foreshadowing: The timeline marks this as the first time 'butting heads' occurs since their romance began.

  • first argument
  • conflict
  • love triangle tension
Q10

Why does Ji-suk choose Hee-jin over Sung-hae?

Ji-suk chooses Hee-jin because their month together has developed into something meaningful beyond his initial first love memories. While Sung-hae represents his past, Hee-jin has become his present and future. Ji-suk is portrayed as someone who values genuine connection and growth, and he sees that potential in Hee-jin. His decision reflects personal growth, moving forward rather than clinging to nostalgic feelings from junior high.

Foreshadowing: Throughout the romance, Ji-suk finds himself increasingly drawn to Hee-jin's unique personality and authenticity.

  • choosing hee-jin
  • moving on
  • emotional decision
Q11

How do Hee-jin and Ji-suk's different personalities work in their relationship?

Their contrasting personalities, one serious and thoughtful, the other cheerful and playful, initially seem incompatible but become their strength. Ji-suk grounds Hee-jin's spontaneity while she brings excitement to his routine-focused life. They push each other outside comfort zones, learning and growing together. The film shows that opposites can complement rather than clash when both partners are willing to understand and adapt.

Foreshadowing: The summary explicitly notes they have '0% in common' yet find themselves pulled toward an unexpected world together.

  • opposites attract
  • personality differences
  • compatibility
