Dick and Mandy, once friends at school, now newlyweds, settle into their first home together—a council-owned house that sits right next to their Religious Knowledge teacher, Ralph Butcher, and his wife Christine. The arrangement quickly folds into a tense intertwining of private life and neighbors, as the everyday friction of marriages and friendships bleeds into the couple’s new domestic space. The house becomes a stage where affection, annoyance, and ambition collide: Dick and Mandy spar over whether to start a family, while the Butchers’ earnest, orderly domestics contrast with the couple’s more exploratory energy.

From the start, the couple are not alone in their new life. Sharon—another school friend—and Mandy’s ever-present sister Gloria drift in and out, each visit adding its own pressure and humor to the mix. The journey back becomes a contentious taxi ride, filled with bickering but also the slow return to a sense of family duty.

That evening, a shift begins to take shape. Dick and Mandy decide to pursue starting a family after all, while at the Butchers’ house Christine articulates a different longing: she wants a sex life and a real family, a desire that seems to drift past Ralph as he remains absorbed in his reading. The conversation hints at a gulf between personal desire and the quiet, methodical routines that define communal life.

Time passes, marked by a Christmas-style pause in the action. Several months later, the trio—Dick, Mandy, and Gloria—have found a fragile reconciliation. Mandy carries a pregnancy, kicking with the quiet promise of a new life. Gloria, now seemingly with a boyfriend, drops by for a listen to the baby’s movements, signaling a sense of hopeful change. As the evening winds down, Gloria heads off to a party, and Dick, with a playful edge, wonders aloud whether the boyfriend will actually show up. The scene closes on a note of domestic comedy and evolving relationships, suggesting that even amid discord, family bonds and shared history still offer a path toward a brighter, more crowded future.
