Lunana: A Yak in the Classroom

Lunana is set in a remote Himalayan village at 4,800 meters elevation, home to about 56 residents. The story takes place primarily in this isolated mountain community, with scenes also in Thimphu (the capital of Bhutan where the teacher originates) and briefly in Australia.

The narrative unfolds in present day contemporary times. Ugyen, a government teacher, is assigned to Lunana for a full school year, with the journey to the village taking a six-day ascent through harsh mountain terrain.

The movie explores three interconnected themes: belonging (finding home through connection with community), education (the transformative power of learning even with limited resources), and music (as a universal bond that bridges cultures).

Ugyen is a government teacher from Thimphu who is assigned to teach in the remote village of Lunana. Initially disappointed by the harsh conditions, he gradually learns to adapt, forming meaningful bonds with the students and discovering a renewed sense of purpose through teaching.

Norbu the yak serves as both a companion and practical resource in Lunana. The yak provides warmth and its dung is used as a vital fuel resource, making it an integral part of daily survival in the harsh mountain environment.

Yak Lebi Lhadar is a traditional village song introduced to Ugyen by the young student Saldon. It becomes a symbol of cultural connection, with Ugyen learning to play it on his guitar. The song reappears in the closing scene, linking the remote Himalayan village to the wider world.

Education in Lunana transcends material limitations. With virtually no resources, Ugyen adapts by drawing on walls to create a blackboard and transforming scarce materials into lessons. The classroom becomes a bridge between traditional mountain culture and new possibilities for the students' futures.

Asha, played by Pem Zam, serves as the village leader and explains the logistics of the trek to Ugyen. She embodies practical leadership and maintains a gentle insistence that education can endure even in hardship. Her niece Pem Zam serves as class captain, bridging the teacher and students.

The ending is bittersweet because Ugyen leaves Lunana after completing his assignment, physically departing from the community that became his home. However, his final performance of the local song signifies a deep, lasting connection and a newfound sense of purpose, blending the sadness of departure with hope for the future.

The movie shows that belonging is built through care and consistent presence. Ugyen arrives as a reluctant outsider but is drawn into the community by the villagers' warmth and the children's eagerness. Through shared songs, daily routines, and patient teaching, his sense of home shifts to include Lunana.

Thimphu represents urban modern life where Ugyen feels disillusioned, while Lunana embodies austere traditional mountain living at 4,800 meters. The contrast highlights the protagonist's journey from urban disconnection to finding meaning through the simplicity and warmth of an isolated community.
