In a tranquil corner of Himachal Pradesh, near Banikhet, a small village life unfolds around its people and a single, popular shop. The village’s shopkeeper is Pankaj Kapur as Nandakishore “Nandu” Khatri, a man whose position in the community and his own ambitions become tangled with a simple object that arrives from outside: a blue umbrella belonging to a group of tourists. The story centers on Biniya, a bright nine-year-old girl who lives with her mother and her elder brother, and whose world suddenly grows larger the day she encounters the umbrella. In a moment of whimsy, Biniya trades her bear claw necklace, the Yantra, for the umbrella, a decision that her mother, Binya’s mother, Piu Dutt clearly views as risky and perhaps unlucky. The necklace is considered auspicious, a token of luck, and the exchange sets off a ripple of pride and superstition that spreads through the village.
As news of the magical-looking umbrella spreads, Biniya’s new-found celebrity draws eyes—and envy. Nandu Khatri, who already has every reason to envy such luxury and prestige, watches the attention shift and longs for a piece of it for himself. He yearns to own an umbrella like hers but cannot afford one, and the possibility of simply buying it becomes a temptation he cannot ignore. The tension between admiration and envy deepens, and the village begins to pendulate between celebration of Biniya’s charm and suspicion of whose possession the umbrella truly signifies.
When trouble looms, Khatri’s shop boy, Paramjit Singh Kakran as Rajaram, steps in with a troubling proposition—helpful if it yields a higher wage, and risky if it means theft. The plan to steal the umbrella is hatched in the shadows, and for a time the village remains unaware of the scheme. Then, one day in a pasture, Biniya discovers her treasured umbrella is missing. Heartbroken, she accuses Khatri of theft, and a search of his shop fails to turn up any trace of the umbrella. The humiliation complicates loyalties: Khatri is publicly shamed, and the village’s faith in him wavers as quickly as the sun in the monsoon sky.
The sting of humiliation drives Khatri to a drastic counter-move. He announces that he will acquire his own umbrella—one just like the coveted blue one—but this time in red, a bold claim that seems to come from Delhi rather than from the local hillside world. The red umbrella becomes the village’s focus, and the center of attention shifts away from Biniya as Khatri is briefly embraced as the symbol of aspiration. To add a formal note to this shift, the villagers nominate Kamal Tiwari as Mukhiya to preside over the upcoming village wrestling competition, a test of pride and community spirit.
Biniya does not abandon her search for truth. She travels with the village policeman to Banikhet to learn where the umbrella truly came from and who sent it. Her investigation reveals a twist: the red umbrella’s dyes are not from a Delhi market at all but were part of a deliberate deception. The truth comes to light during the wrestling match when rain begins to fall; the red dye on the umbrella is washed away, revealing Khatri as the thief.
With the revelation, Khatri is shunned and faced with a new reality of isolation. His shop loses customers, and even Rajaram distances himself from the situation. Yet in a surprising turn, Biniya—guided by a sense of fairness and empathy—decides to return the umbrella to Khatri, recognizing him as the rightful owner of the borrowed pride he had pursued. This gesture allows the community to heal and welcomes Khatri back into its fold, illustrating a village that learns from its mistakes and values mercy alongside justice.
