Ugyen has completed four of his five mandatory years of government teacher training but lacks passion for the profession. His true aspiration is to pursue a singing career in Australia, viewing it as his chance to escape the constraints of his traditional life and follow his musical dreams.

After arriving and seeing the poor conditions with no electricity, running water, or toilet, Ugyen asks to return. However, he is forced to wait for the mules to rest. The next morning, class captain Pem Zam awakens him, expressing how eager the students are for his arrival. This inspires Ugyen, realizing he can make a real difference for children who deeply respect teachers, so he commits to staying for the year.

Earlier scenes show Ugyen questioning his purpose, and Pem Zam's enthusiasm provides the catalyst he needs.

Saldon gives Ugyen a yak named Norbu to help him with collecting dung, which is essential for warmth in the cold mountain village.
