Love Birds

Doug’s life, once blissfully routine, takes a nosedive when his long-term girlfriend, Susan, portrayed by Faye Smythe, decides to leave him. Just when he thinks all hope is lost, an unexpected event occurs—a wounded Shelduck, a bird native to New Zealand, unexpectedly crash-lands into his life. This unlikely encounter brings a spark of excitement and adventure into Doug’s otherwise dull existence, prompting him to take on the responsibility of nursing the duck back to health.

In his quest to properly care for the injured bird, Doug meets animal specialist and busy single mother, Holly, played by Sally Hawkins. As he forms a connection with Holly, he begins to realize that true love may be within reach, even amidst the chaos. However, his workmates, including Kanga (Dave Fane), Brent (Wesley Dowdell), and Gurneesh (Alvin Maharaj), tease him incessantly about bonding with a duck, which adds a humorous layer to his journey.

As Doug and Holly’s relationship blossoms, complications arise when Holly’s son, Taylor, portrayed by Beck Taylor, expresses resentment towards Doug, fearing that he might replace his late father. Determined to win Taylor over, Doug attempts to showcase his romantic side by taking Holly and her son on outings, striving to create a bond with them.

As the narrative unfolds, Doug finds that his life is transforming into something richer and more fulfilling, albeit complicated. The presence of the duck, whom he affectionately names Pierre, poses a unique challenge as Doug must bring it with him everywhere. Additionally, he faces the financial struggles of his good friend, Craig (Craig Hall), who is on the brink of bankruptcy. Along the way, Doug also befriends the eccentric vet, Dr. Buster, played by Bryan Brown, who introduces him to a refreshing perspective on life.

Meanwhile, Holly’s supportive best friend, Brenda (Emily Barclay), advocates for Doug. Yet, just as Doug and Holly begin to connect on a deeper level, Susan makes a surprising comeback, wanting Doug back and inviting him to dinner for a potentially life-altering reunion. Although Doug is reluctant to revisit his past relationship, Holly catches wind of his dinner plans with Susan, leading her to break off their relationship, believing him to be unfaithful.

Ultimately, through the quirky yet insightful relationship with Pierre, Doug embarks on a journey of self-discovery that leads him to understand his true place in the world. As Holly teaches him how to care for the duck, Doug learns valuable lessons about love, responsibility, and the importance of being true to oneself, giving him the confidence needed to pursue a genuine connection with Holly despite the complications in their lives.
