What Happens in Little Hearts: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Little Hearts (2024) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

In 2015 Hyderabad, Nalli Akhil Kumar is a cheerful, easygoing intermediate student whose days revolve around hanging out with friends, chowing down on Kachoris, and dodging studies. His strict father, Gopal Rao, is determined that he clear EAMCET and become an IT engineer. When Akhil fails the entrance exam, his girlfriend Sameera breaks up with him and his father enrolls him in a long-term coaching institute, kickstarting a fresh set of hopes and challenges.

At the coaching center, Akhil encounters Kaathyayani, a reserved NEET aspirant who is under pressure from her physician parents, Krishankanth and Sangeetha, to crack the exam. Akhil instantly falls for her and tries a variety of humorous stunts to win her attention, with the help of his friend Madhu. Kaathyayani initially rejects his advances, revealing that she is three years older and that she has been in long-term coaching for the fourth time. Yet Akhil’s feelings stay unwavering, and he gradually wins her over, leading to a budding romance.

As their relationship grows, the couple faces typical student-life hurdles: bunked classes, wary parents, the dynamics of a busy social circle, and the constant pull between academics and affection. With Kaathyayani’s encouragement, Akhil shifts his sights to a journalism degree and works to convince his father to support this unconventional path. But trouble surfaces when Kaathyayani’s parents learn of the romance. They impose strict limits on her freedom and sever direct communication between the two. Meanwhile, Akhil persuades Gopal Rao to accept his career choice, while Kaathyayani convinces her parents to let her pursue Biotechnology in Bangalore, promising that she will not contact Akhil.

The lovers embark on a long-distance phase, maintaining their bond through WhatsApp video calls and steady communication, all while continuing to support one another’s goals. Over time, both achieve success in their respective fields, and the realization of each other’s family wealth softens the parents’ objections, paving the way for an eventual union. The film concludes with the engagement ceremony of Akhil and Kaathyayani, a moment of joy tempered by the lively subplot of Akhil’s younger brother Nikhil flirting with Kaathyayani’s younger sister Neelambari.

Little Hearts Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about Little Hearts (2024): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why does Akhil decide to study journalism instead of engineering?

Akhil's career shift comes directly from Kaathyayani's influence during their time at the coaching center in Little Hearts. While Akhil was originally pushed toward IT engineering by his father Gopal Rao, Kaathyayani's encouragement nudges him toward a journalism degree that better fits his outgoing personality. He then works to convince his strict father that this unconventional path can still lead to a stable career, eventually winning Gopal Rao's approval.

Foreshadowing: Early scenes show Akhil being more expressive and socially curious than studious, hinting that a people-oriented career suits him better than engineering.

  • akhil journalism
  • career change
  • gopal rao
  • kaathyayani influence
  • engineering vs journalism
Q2

Why do Kaathyayani's parents restrict her from talking to Akhil?

Kaathyayani's parents, Krishankanth and Sangeetha, are both physicians who have been pressuring her to crack the NEET exam after multiple coaching attempts. When they discover her romance with Akhil, they see it as a distraction from her medical goals and impose strict limits on her freedom, severing direct communication between the two. This parental opposition becomes the central conflict that forces the couple into a cautious long-distance arrangement.

Foreshadowing: Kaathyayani mentions she has been in long-term coaching for the fourth time, signaling how invested her parents are in her academic success.

  • kaathyayani parents
  • krishankanth
  • sangeetha
  • restricted contact
  • neet pressure
  • family opposition
Q3

Why does Kaathyayani agree to move to Bangalore for Biotechnology?

Kaathyayani uses Biotechnology in Bangalore as a compromise to regain some independence from her controlling parents. She convinces Krishankanth and Sangeetha to let her relocate by promising that she will not contact Akhil, which makes the arrangement acceptable to them. The move simultaneously fulfills her own academic ambitions and creates the long-distance setup that allows the romance to continue outside parental supervision.

Foreshadowing: Her parents' strict restrictions make it clear she has no freedom in Hyderabad, hinting that a geographic change is the only realistic escape.

  • kaathyayani bangalore
  • biotechnology
  • long distance
  • parental compromise
  • college move
Q4

Why does Kaathyayani reject Akhil's advances at first?

Kaathyayani initially pushes Akhil away because of her age insecurity and her history of academic failure. She reveals that she is three years older than him and has already been in long-term coaching for the fourth time, which makes her doubt whether a younger, carefree student will take her seriously. Her rejection is also a defense mechanism shaped by the pressure from her physician parents to crack NEET, not a reflection of her actual feelings toward Akhil.

Foreshadowing: Kaathyayani's reserved nature at the coaching center hints that she has been protecting herself emotionally after repeated setbacks.

  • kaathyayani rejection
  • age gap
  • coaching fourth time
  • neet aspirant
  • self doubt
Q5

How do Akhil and Kaathyayani's parents finally accept their relationship?

Parental approval in Little Hearts comes gradually as both Akhil and Kaathyayani prove themselves through career success and maturity. Akhil persuades his father Gopal Rao to accept his journalism path, while Kaathyayani earns her parents' respect by committing to Biotechnology in Bangalore. The realization that both families are financially comfortable further softens earlier objections, and the engagement ceremony marks the final confirmation that both sides have come around.

Foreshadowing: Kaathyayani's initial promise to her parents that she would not contact Akhil foreshadows that her family prioritizes stability and discipline above all.

  • parental approval
  • engagement
  • family acceptance
  • career success
  • gopal rao
  • krishankanth
Q6

Why does Sameera break up with Akhil?

Sameera breaks up with Akhil immediately after he fails the EAMCET entrance exam in Little Hearts. Her reaction shows that the relationship was conditional on his academic performance and his projected future as an IT engineer, which now appears uncertain. The breakup serves as the emotional low point that pushes Akhil into long-term coaching, where his real story with Kaathyayani begins.

Foreshadowing: Sameera is only briefly present, which hints from the start that she is not central to Akhil's long-term arc.

  • sameera breakup
  • eamcet failure
  • akhil ex girlfriend
  • motivation for change
Q7

What happens at Akhil and Kaathyayani's engagement ceremony?

The engagement ceremony in Little Hearts serves as the happy ending, confirming that both sets of parents have accepted the couple. The ceremony itself is light and celebratory, reflecting the film's overall comedic tone. A running subplot plays out as Akhil's younger brother Nikhil flirts with Kaathyayani's younger sister Neelambari, adding humor and hinting at a possible future pairing.

Foreshadowing: Nikhil is briefly shown as a playful presence in the household earlier, foreshadowing his comedic role at the finale.

  • engagement ceremony

Q8

Why does Gopal Rao enroll Akhil in long-term coaching after the EAMCET failure?

After Akhil fails EAMCET, his father Gopal Rao doubles down on his original plan to make Akhil an IT engineer. Long-term coaching is seen as a second chance to prepare intensively for a retake of the entrance exam and secure an engineering seat. This decision also removes Akhil from his carefree social circle, pushing him into a more focused environment where he meets Kaathyayani.

Foreshadowing: Gopal Rao's strictness is established in the opening scenes, foreshadowing that he will respond to failure with control rather than flexibility.

  • long term coaching
  • gopal rao
  • eamcet failure
  • akhil father
  • it engineering
Q9

How do Akhil and Kaathyayani maintain their relationship during the long-distance phase?

After Kaathyayani moves to Bangalore, the couple relies on regular WhatsApp video calls and steady communication to keep their bond alive. They continue to support each other's academic and career goals from a distance rather than allowing separation to weaken their commitment. The long-distance phase actually strengthens the relationship, as both successfully build their careers and eventually earn their families' respect.

Foreshadowing: Kaathyayani's promise to her parents that she would not contact Akhil is broken almost immediately, foreshadowing that the couple will find ways to stay connected regardless of restrictions.

  • long distance relationship
  • whatsapp calls
  • bangalore hyderabad
  • couple communication
Q10

Who are Nikhil and Neelambari in the ending of Little Hearts?

Nikhil is Akhil's younger brother and Neelambari is Kaathyayani's younger sister, and both are introduced primarily through the film's final subplot. At the engagement ceremony, Nikhil flirts with Neelambari, creating a light comedic parallel to Akhil and Kaathyayani's own romance. Their interaction adds humor to the finale and leaves the door open for a possible future storyline.

  • nikhil
  • neelambari
  • younger siblings
  • engagement subplot
  • romantic comedy
Q11

Why does Akhil and Kaathyayani's relationship face family opposition?

Family opposition arises because both sets of parents have very specific academic expectations for their children. Gopal Rao wants Akhil to become an IT engineer, while Krishankanth and Sangeetha want Kaathyayani to crack NEET and follow them into medicine. The romance threatens both plans, which is why each family initially tries to shut it down before career success eventually changes their stance.

Foreshadowing: The opening contrast between Akhil's carefree attitude and Gopal Rao's strict discipline sets up the central parent-child tension.

  • family opposition
  • parental expectations
  • neet pressure
  • engineering pressure
  • romance conflict
