In the closing moments of Lola, the cycle of trauma and tragedy comes full circle. After Lola’s plan to start a new life with her unborn child in Dallas seems within reach, her world shatters when Arlo, her little brother, is taken from her in the most heartbreaking way. When Mona cuts Arlo’s hair to protect him, she unintentionally pushes him into running away, leading to his deadly accident on the road. Lola receives the devastating news that Arlo has died, leaving her absolutely crushed because he was, in many ways, the only pure hope she had left. Her mother’s blame and the pain of losing Arlo drive her to the brink, and she ends up overdosing on drugs—an attempt to escape her unbearable grief.

However, Lola isn’t just about despair. As Lola confronts her past and the destructive cycle from which she’s trying to escape, she chooses to break free from the cycle of dysfunction. She discovers she’s pregnant and decides to keep her baby, seeing this as a chance for redemption and hope. Throughout her last AA meeting, Lola openly shares her desire to become a good mother, opposing her mother’s cynical worldview. She emphasizes that trauma isn’t inherited but shaped by life’s challenges. With the support of her friends and her partner, she commits to a different future—one where love, care, and hope can replace the tragic patterns of her past. In the film’s final scenes, Lola looks forward to a fresh start, ready to embrace motherhood and leave behind the cycles of hurt, desperate to forge a new, brighter life for herself and her child. The ending is both tragic and hopeful, highlighting the possibility of renewal even after profound loss.
