Ray West John Savage is a deeply troubled Vietnam War veteran whose shadow hangs over a cloistered life in the Texas backwoods. With his wife Kate West Nastassja Kinski and their two sons, the family runs a small bar and presents a veneer of normalcy to the outside world, but the house harbors a brutal pattern: Ray’s violence is a constant, and he exercises tyrannical control over his 19-year-old son, Jimmy West Ryan Phillippe. Jimmy is kept apart from the rest of the family, confined in a separate warehouse, a chilling symbol of the siege that defines their days.

Behind closed doors, Ray’s brutality is more than mere aggression; it is a weapon he uses to shape loyalty and silence dissent. He even taunts Jimmy with the cruel nickname “Little Boy Blue,” a grim reminder of the twisted bond between father and son that frames every moment of their lives. Outwardly, the West household clings to the appearance of a normal family, but the truth is a slow-burning fuse waiting to ignite.

Jimmy’s life takes a painful turn when he discusses his future with his girlfriend Traci Connor Jenny Lewis. She offers a glimpse of possibility—a full college scholarship—that would pull him away from the shadow of his father. Yet Jimmy declines, driven by a sense of duty to shield his younger brothers from Ray’s wrath. Traci understands his hesitation, but their conflicting priorities pull them apart, and the couple’s relationship frays under the weight of fear, obligation, and a future that feels increasingly unstable.

As the story unfolds, Ray’s dark past begins to surface, creating tension not only within the household but also in the small town. A stranger comes into the bar seeking friendship, and Ray’s misgivings spiral into violence: he kills a man who seems to be a private detective, Det. Fleaharty Jerry Cotton. The act underscores the danger lurking beneath Ray’s surface and intensifies Jimmy’s growing paranoia about what his father might do next. Jimmy’s fear for his family deepens as he becomes increasingly wary of Ray’s capacity for murder. He urges Kate to take the children and flee, but Kate resists, paralyzed by fear and unable to imagine surviving on the run in such a remote setting.

One morning, after an emotionally brutal confrontation, Jimmy goes to bid farewell to Traci, explaining that he cannot abandon his brothers to Ray’s violence. When he returns, the tension erupts into a violent clash between father and son, a confrontation Ray has anticipated for some time. The struggle ends with Jimmy disappearing, leaving the town and the family’s fate hanging in the balance.

Into this already perilous mix enters a second, more personal thread: Doris Knight [Shirley Knight] arrives in town, searching for her missing private investigator. Her investigation unveils a long-hidden horror: nineteen years earlier, she had encountered Ray when he accepted a ride with her family. She recounts how Ray brutally attacked her husband, abducted their son, and left her for dead, a memory that resurfaces with each retelling and binds the present danger to a distant past. Doris’s account links Jimmy to a chilling history and the “Little Boy Blue” book that has haunted Ray’s crimes since the start.

Doris takes action, slipping past police supervision to confront Ray at the West home. With the boys at the lake and Kate sweeping the warehouse for Jimmy, Doris tracks Ray down, shoots him, and then makes her way into the warehouse where Kate hides. In a moment of raw grief and fury, Doris lays bare the depth of Ray’s crimes—yet in the next breath, she fixes her rage on Kate herself, killing her without hesitation. The boys stumble from their hiding place as a police officer arrives, and Doris attempts to shoot him but is stopped by gunfire, dying as the police close in.

The aftermath reveals the full scale of Ray’s crimes. The police discover a hidden chamber beneath the family’s minivan, where Jimmy lies unconscious, bound to a wooden structure and badly beaten. He is rescued and rushed into an ambulance, where a moment of eerie, hopeful vision overtakes him: he imagines a future in which he is married to Traci, raises children, and serves as a policeman. As the vision fades, Jimmy wakes with a renewed vow: he will never abandon his sons. The ambulance pulls away, carrying a survivor toward a future that promises safety and memory, even as the night of violence has left an indelible scar on the town and its people.
