Limbo leaves viewers with a haunting and unresolved ending. The police had no real interest in finding the truth, especially since Charlotte Hayes was an Aboriginal girl, and her case was dismissed or ignored. In the present, Travis’s re-investigation uncovers disturbing truths. When he visits Leon’s home, he finds that Leon has passed away, but his brother Joseph still lives and maintains Leon’s innocence. The crucial discovery comes when Travis finds a burned-out car in a nearby cave, which he now realizes was driven by Leon on the night Charlotte disappeared. This evidence strongly suggests that Leon was responsible for Charlotte’s death, especially since the car was burned to destroy any evidence. When Travis confronts Joseph about what he found, he uncovers evidence that indicates Leon was involved in sexually abusing young women, including Charlotte. The film ends with Travis in a moral quandary—he is about to shoot Joseph, who is suffering from old age and illness, but chooses not to, recognizing that justice has been denied forever and that his role is simply to leave the town with unresolved truths. As his car drives away, the film leaves us with an unsettling sense that some crimes are too buried by time and prejudice to ever be truly avenged, and the haunting landscape of the outback reflects the tragic silence surrounding these unresolved wrongs. The story ultimately emphasizes the ongoing impact of systemic injustice and the deep scars left on those affected, while refusing to provide a clear-cut resolution.
