In 1961, retired sheriff George Blackledge enjoys a peaceful life on his ranch with his wife Margaret, son James, and his family. They cherish their time together, living in harmony away from the bustling world.

The family's tranquility is shattered when Margaret discovers James's horse wandering alone. George discovers James's lifeless body by the creek after a fatal fall, resulting in a devastating loss for the family.

In 1963, Lorna marries Donnie Weboy, but it is clear she is still emotionally tied to her past. Despite her marriage, Lorna clings to Donnie out of necessity for their infant son, Jimmy.

While shopping, Margaret witnesses Donnie handling Jimmy roughly after a minor accident with ice cream. This incident raises alarm bells for Margaret, deepening her concerns about Lorna and Jimmy's safety.

After trying to check on Lorna, Margaret discovers that she and her family have vanished. This prompts her to take immediate action, leading to a desperate resolve to rescue her grandson, Jimmy.

Margaret convinces George to join her on a perilous journey to find Jimmy. Initially hesitant, George resolves to support his wife in this dangerous quest fueled by love and desperation.

Their search for Lorna and Jimmy leads George and Margaret to the local sheriff, Sheriff Nevelson. He directs them towards Forsyth, Montana, providing a glimmer of hope in their desperate plight.

While searching for clues, George and Margaret encounter Peter Dragswolf, a kind Native American who offers them food and shelter. He becomes a significant ally on their quest, guiding them toward the Weboy family.

The following day, George and Margaret meet Bill Weboy, Donnie's uncle, who introduces them to his mother, Blanche. The atmosphere changes drastically when Lorna and Jimmy appear, revealing underlying tensions.

Despite Blanche's intimidating demeanor, George and Margaret manage to convince Lorna to escape with them under the cover of night. With fear of Donnie's retribution looming over her, Lorna ultimately agrees to their plan.

A confrontation erupts when Blanche and Donnie invade the Blackledges' motel room. Amid chaos and violence, George is forced to brandish his gun as tensions reach a breaking point, resulting in a brutal encounter.

In the aftermath of the violent encounter, they learn from a local officer that Jimmy is now legally a Weboy. This news devastates George and Margaret, forcing them to retreat back to Montana in despair.

On their way back to Montana, George's health deteriorates, prompting them to seek shelter with Peter again. Peter shares his own painful experiences, inspiring Margaret to express her longing to be near Jimmy.

That night, George takes a drastic step and returns to the Weboy residence. Armed with a shotgun, he confronts Donnie, culminating in a series of violent events that lead to George's tragic injury.

In a climactic turn, Margaret seizes the shotgun to avenge her family. She escapes at dawn with Lorna and Jimmy, but the pain of losing George weighs heavily on her heart as they drive home together.
