Chloe Steele, a student from the University of Central Arkansas, returns home from college to surprise her father, Rayford Steele, on his birthday. What begins as a family reunion quickly becomes a brewing storm of secrets and sudden, startling changes. Chloe’s mother, Irene, has recently embraced a fervent faith and begins speaking with a zeal that unsettles Chloe. The tensions at home are amplified when Chloe notices her father’s odd behavior: he’s flirted with a flight attendant named Hattie Durham, has removed his wedding ring, and a set of London-bound tickets his daughter didn’t know about points to a trip he’d secretly planned.

The day takes a surreal turn when Chloe and her brother head to the mall. In a blink, her brother vanishes, leaving behind his clothes and a hint that something extraordinary has occurred. Others vanish as well: shoppers disappear, alarms blare, and chaos erupts as a driverless car smashes through storefronts and a small plane crashes into the parking lot. On a bridge over a road, Chloe becomes overwhelmed by despair and contemplates ending her life. She is interrupted by a call from Buck, who is in the cockpit with Rayford, and together they try to piece together the terrifying new reality. Rayford explains that all major New York-area airports are shut, streets are clogged, and fuel is running dangerously low. With few options, Chloe improvises a plan: she and the other survivors clear away construction equipment to reveal a hidden stretch of road as a makeshift runway, aided by Chloe’s compass app that provides the coordinates. The improvised landing zone is rough, but Rayford manages a tense glide, bringing the plane down and saving everyone aboard.

Stepping out of the jet, the passengers confront a world set ablaze by the catastrophe that has swept the planet. The sky glows with fires, and the usual sense of order has collapsed into confusion and fear. Buck, in the cockpit, observes that what they’re witnessing might be the end of the world, while Chloe remains determined that this moment is not an end, but a beginning—an opening chapter to a new, uncertain era.
