Patty Myers, Patty Dunning, awakens to a radio broadcast that details the sudden disappearance of millions around the globe, with the announcer speculating that this might be the rapture of the Church foretold in the Bible. Patty, who attends a liberal church, learns that her husband, Jerry Bradford, Thom Rachford, has also vanished. In response, the United Nations unveils a drastic emergency regime called the United Nations Imperium of Total Emergency, or UNITE, and declares that anyone who refuses the mark of the beast identifying allegiance to UNITE will be hunted down and arrested.
The film then shifts into a series of flashbacks that trace Patty’s life before the Rapture and reveal three evolving paths among her friends and herself. Jenny, Colleen Niday, believes Jesus Christ is her Savior and holds steadfast faith, while Diane, Maryann Rachford, is more worldly in her outlook. Patty, who considers herself a Christian because she reads the Bible and attends church, discovers her pastor, Pastor Balmer, Clarence Balmer, is shown to be an unbeliever, a detail that gnaws at her sense of spiritual certainty. Meanwhile, Patty’s husband has begun attending another church and has accepted Jesus, a development that deepens the emotional and theological tension that threads through the story.
The next morning, Patty wakes to the chilling realization that her husband and millions of others have disappeared. She is torn between continuing in her own hesitant faith and embracing the certainty some of her friends sense could come from surrendering to Christ. She also faces the terrifying prospect of the mark of the beast, which UNITE demands as proof of loyalty. As the pressure builds, Patty attempts to avoid UNITE and the Mark, but she is eventually captured. She makes a desperate escape, only to be pursued by UNITE on a bridge, where she is ultimately cornered by UNITE’s forces led by the Leader of U.N.I.T.E., Gareld L. Jackson, and falls from the bridge to her death.
Patty then awakens and realizes it was all a dream. For a moment, she feels relief, but that relief is short-lived when the radio returns with the news that millions have indeed vanished. Frantically, she searches for her husband, only to find him missing as well. The final, chilling truth lands with brutal clarity: the Rapture has actually occurred, and Patty has been left behind. The dream’s wake-up call carries a heavy weight, leaving her to confront the new, unsettling reality of a world where faith, absence, and an alarming dispensation coexist in a way she never anticipated.
