Chloe Steele, a student at the University of Southern California, returns home to surprise her father, Rayford Steele, on his birthday. However, her excitement quickly turns into disappointment when she learns that Rayford cannot attend the celebration due to a last-minute flight.

While waiting at the airport for Rayford, Chloe crosses paths with investigative reporter Cameron 'Buck' Williams. Their chance meeting serves as a foreshadowing for the events that are about to unfold in their lives and hints at a possible connection between them.

Rayford arrives just in time to apologize to Chloe for his absence at the birthday celebration. He is called to pilot a flight to London, assuring Chloe that everything is fine at home, despite her concerns about his relationship with flight attendant Hattie Durham.
