What Happens in Moonshine County Express: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Moonshine County Express (1977) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Dot Hammer, Susan Howard, refuses to sell out her inheritance—a stockpile of whiskey—after her moonshiner father is murdered by Sweetwater, Morgan Woodward and his gang, on orders from Jack Starkey, William Conrad, the town's kingpin. Dot's sisters, Betty Hammer Claudia Jennings and Sissy Hammer Maureen McCormick, join the effort to move the whiskey themselves while staying out of Starkey’s reach, hoping to keep the loot safe for their family.

Dot then gives in to the attentions of J.B. Johnson, John Saxon, the local car racer and moonshine runner, hoping he will help them sell the stash and outmaneuver Starkey’s men. The plan quickly grows brutal as a dog is killed, along with the local mechanic and moonshine salesman, underscoring the danger that shadows every move they make. When they attempt to haul the stockpile in a rental truck, Starkey William Conrad and one of his enforcers fire at them, threatening to end their bid for freedom.

Just as despair seems to close in, the local sheriff, Albert Salmi, arrives and arrests Starkey for the murder of their Uncle Bill, Dub Taylor, who had betrayed them by revealing the stash’s location yet dared to suggest they share the profits. With the law stepping in, Dot and J.B weigh their dwindling options and decide to head west—toward California—while Dot playfully hints that she might lower her standards enough to marry J.B, a final spark of light amid the precarious roads ahead.
