Ray, who runs a hardware store in a small Texas town, receives photographs from a private detective, Skip. These images reveal that Ray's wife, Stacy-Lynn, is being unfaithful, sending Ray into a spiral of despair.

Distraught by the revelations about his marriage, Ray purchases a revolver from a local gun shop. With a heavy heart, he drives to the motel where he contemplates taking his own life.

While sitting in his car at the motel, Ray is approached by a stranger who mistakes him for a contract killer named Harry. The stranger hands Ray a substantial sum of money, believing Ray is there to carry out an assassination.

Ray finds himself torn between his marriage issues and the unexpected windfall. He ponders using the contract money to help finance a beauty salon for Stacy-Lynn, rather than realizing the potential crime he is being drawn into.

Reluctantly, Ray follows the man whose address he received to a bar. However, his poor surveillance skills lead to a confrontation where he ends up shooting the man in self-defense.

After killing the man, Ray panics and dumps the body by the roadside. In a moment of careless error, he leaves behind one of Skip's photographs of Stacy-Lynn next to the corpse, implicating her in the potential crime.

The police determine that the dead man is James Barlow, a local lawyer. Discoveries from the crime scene, including the photo of Stacy-Lynn, cause detectives to suspect her involvement with the murder.

The stranger who hired Ray finds him at the hardware store, accusing him of stealing money from Barlow's safe. He gives Ray a deadline to return the supposed stolen money, intensifying Ray’s predicament.

Ray and Skip investigate Barlow’s office and learn about blackmail involving Adam Ledoux, a local car dealership owner. They discover that Barlow was handling a large payout in connection with Ledoux's troubled financial dealings.

After deducing that Barlow likely left a crucial briefcase in his car, Ray and Skip locate the vehicle. The briefcase contains a significant amount of cash, which Ray considers using to reconcile with Stacy-Lynn.

When Ray returns home, he is confronted by Stacy-Lynn and Junior, who turn him in to the police for the murder of Barlow. The briefcase filled with money is seized, complicating Ray's situation further.

During his transport to jail, Harry ambushes the police vehicle, killing the officers and allowing Ray to escape amidst the chaos. Seizing the chance, Ray races to Junior's home for answers.

At Junior's house, Ray learns that his brother left his wife for Stacy-Lynn and has been embezzling from the family store. This revelation devastates Ray, pushing him towards an inevitable confrontation.

Ray tracks down his wife and brother at a motel and, in a heated exchange, he shoots Junior, declaring he wants a divorce. This act culminates in a violent confrontation that irreversibly changes their lives.

As Ray and Harry face off inside the motel, they both suffer fatal gunshot wounds after a fierce firefight. Meanwhile, Skip manages to escape, leaving Stacy-Lynn in a precarious position in the aftermath.
