At the beginning of this interesting tale, we meet a man who hastily jumps into his car and speeds off, only to collide with someone standing in the street. Clinton, who lives with his mother Edie in their basement, harbors resentment towards Ford’s Megastore, believing it to be the downfall of his comic book store. In a bid to recover, he now offers comic books and toys at a yard sale. However, a curious little boy isn’t intrigued by the merchandise but instead wonders about the availability of Mouser, Clinton’s beloved cat.
Sadly, Mouser seems downcast and exhibits peculiar behavior, which their veterinarian assures is typical for a cat of his age—17 years old. Tragedy strikes when Clinton discovers Mouser lying lifeless in the street, a curious object resembling an arrow protruding from him. Although upon closer inspection, it is determined that the object is actually a product sold exclusively at Ford’s. Clinton, distraught, decides to inform the authorities, but Sheriff Hoyle takes a rather lackadaisical approach to the situation, all while harboring a secret attraction to Edie. This bizarre incident soon catches the media’s attention, turning Clinton into something of a local celebrity.
In a twist that feels all too familiar, Sheriff Hoyle suggests Clinton leave the real investigation to the professionals—a classic trope that no one ever seems to heed, right? As fate would have it, Clinton stumbles upon a flyer for a lost cat that turns out to be Mouser. Following the lead, he arrives at an assisted living facility, where he finds a room filled with countless pictures of his dearly departed friend. To his surprise, the cat belongs to a stunning young woman named Greta, distinguished by her tattoos and striking fire engine red streaks in her dark hair.
Confronting Greta, Clinton accuses her of foul play, but she explains that the cat is indeed hers, named Horatio, who is a notorious escape artist. Having previously been employed at Ford’s, Greta left after uncovering some potentially illicit activities within the store; now she spends her days styling the hair of elderly residents while enjoying a good deal on her rent. After Clinton presents evidence that solidifies his claim to Mouser, he and Greta join forces in an investigation filled with unexpected humor and perilous encounters, particularly with the eccentric Yi Kim, whose true nature remains shrouded in mystery.
