What Happens in Lahu Ke Do Rang: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Lahu Ke Do Rang (1979) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Shamsher Singh Vinod Khanna is part of the Indian army commanded by Subhas Chandra Bose, dedicated to driving the British out of India. When a British pursuit threads its way to Hong Kong, he is rescued by Suzy Helen. Suzy falls for him, and their bond grows into a pregnancy, but she honors his higher calling and lets him return to the fatherland, extracting a promise that he will come back.

Back in India, Shamsher has already married Ladjo [Indrani Mukherjee], and they raise a son named Raj. The peace is short-lived: Shamsher’s friends Shankar [Ranjeet Bedi] and Mac [Mac Mohan] betray him over a gold shipment and murder him. Mac manages to hide the stolen gold before being jailed, leaving the others to scramble for power and payback.

Years pass, and Raj Singh [Vinod Khanna] grows into a police officer, driven by the desire to uncover his father’s killers. Mac is released from prison and finds himself targeted by Shankar, now living under the alias Devi Dayal [Ranjeet Bedi], who continues to pursue the loot. Mac finally reveals the truth: the gold lies buried inside a car sunk to the bottom of a deep lake. To recover it, a skilled diver is hired—Suraj [Danny Denzongpa], who is the son of Shamsher and Suzy and who harbors anger over the way his mother was betrayed when his father never returned.

On a separate mission connected to a murder case, Raj travels to Darjeeling, where he encounters Roma [Shabana Azmi], a woman whose grace and strength draw him in. As fate would have it, Suraj is also in Darjeeling, and a complicated triangle forms; he is drawn to Roma, though he struggles to express his feelings. Roma opens up about the shadows in her past, recounting how her own mother was entangled with drugs controlled by Devi Dayal, the man who betrayed Shamsher and played a role in the family’s unraveling.

As the layers peel back, the stories of Raj, Suraj, and Roma intersect in ways that bring old wounds to light. Secrets about loyalty, love, and vengeance collide, revealing how deeply the betrayals of the past have shaped the present. In the end, Raj and Suraj set aside their earlier rivalries to join forces, determined to avenge their fathers and restore a sense of justice to the family and to the country they serve. The film weaves together themes of duty, betrayal, and redemption, driving toward a climactic unison of two sons who choose to fight together for truth and recompense, even as their own hearts wrestle with the legacies of those who came before them.
