In the charming coastal town of Cornwall, England, during the year 1936, the Widdington sisters, Janet and Ursula, enjoy a serene life amidst the idyllic surroundings of their quaint fishing village. This peaceful existence is abruptly disrupted when a young Polish violinist, Andrea, is tragically swept overboard during a storm on his way to America. His shipwrecked form washes ashore near their home, prompting the sisters to take it upon themselves to nurse him back to health.
As the gifted musician gradually recovers, his presence begins to significantly affect the sisters’ lives, particularly igniting romantic feelings within Ursula for this handsome stranger. Their tranquil lives take another unexpected turn with the arrival of Olga Danilof, a free-spirited artist and sister to the renowned violinist Boris Danilof. Captivated by Andrea’s extraordinary talent, Olga reaches out to the sisters, hoping to introduce her brother to him. However, Janet, sensing the intense connection forming between Ursula and Andrea, makes the fateful decision to burn Olga’s letter, oblivious to the emotional chaos this action will bring.
As underlying tensions grow palpable, the bond between Olga and Andrea deepens, fueled by their mutual passion for music. Things come to a head when Andrea questions the sisters about the missing letter, leading him to confront Ursula’s secret feelings for him. With a heavy heart filled with regret, he expresses his apologies, enabling a moment of reconciliation among the trio.
Seizing this moment, Olga eagerly introduces her brother to Andrea, revealing that he will be in London for a limited time. Despite his deep-seated affection for the sisters, Andrea understands that this presents a vital opportunity to advance his musical career and ultimately departs with Olga, leaving the Widdingtons bereft and without a goodbye.
The sisters are consumed by anxiety as they attempt to reach out to acquaintances of Andrea’s, only to discover he has indeed left with Olga. Ursula is heartbroken by the abrupt departure, but Janet strives to provide solace. In an unexpected twist, Andrea subsequently sends a heartfelt letter to the sisters along with a portrait of himself that Olga painted, thanking them for their kindness.
As the village holds its breath, the Widdington sisters embark on a momentous journey to London to witness Andrea’s much-anticipated public performance in Britain. Meanwhile, the rest of the community gathers around radios, eager to share in the experience of the talented musician who has captured their hearts.
