Krampus

The film begins with a chaotic montage of frenzied shoppers storming a store for holiday deals, trampling employees while enthusiastically grabbing coveted items, all set to the cheerful tune of “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas.” In the midst of this frenzy, we meet two parents, Tom Engel and Sarah Engel, who rush to their son Max after he gets into a scuffle with another child who disrespected Santa Claus. Max’s sister, Beth, captures the entire scene on her phone, amused by the spectacle.

After returning home, the family gathers around, including Max’s German grandmother Omi, who is busy baking. While Sarah tries to keep the holiday spirit alive as she prepares for her sister’s family to arrive, she hangs up a family portrait with Santa—though it’s marred by the lack of enthusiasm from everyone in the photo and Santa’s inappropriate glance at Beth.

The mood shifts as Linda, Sarah’s sister, arrives with her husband Howard and their children: Howie Jr., Stevie, Jordan, and baby Chrissy, along with their dog Rosie. Tensions rise with the unwelcome arrival of Aunt Dorothy, whom Sarah dreads. The family gathers around for dinner, where Howard can’t resist boasting about his gun collection, much to Linda’s chagrin. As the evening progresses, Linda and Howard’s children torment Max, mocking him for still believing in Santa; they even steal his letter and read aloud his innocent wishes. Frustrated, Max snaps at his family, longing for the Christmas traditions of the past, and retreats to his room stewing in anger.

In a fit of rage, Max tears up his letter to Santa and throws the pieces out of his window. This act unleashes a dark cloud over their neighborhood, bringing forth a powerful storm that knocks out electricity. The following day, the family faces the harsh reality of being snow-stranded without heat. While looking out the window, Max spots a sinister snowman standing eerily in front of their house. A knock on the door brings a delivery guy with mysterious boxes, and though he has a sack of gifts, he insists it wasn’t meant for them. Meanwhile, Beth attempts to escape to her boyfriend’s house in search of power but never returns.

Her absence creates palpable tension as Tom and Howard decide to search for Beth outside. They venture into the blizzard, but soon find their surroundings unnerving, discovering only chaos. After an encounter with a terrifying creature, peril continues to escalate. Inside the house, the children’s horrors multiply as they stumble upon disturbing animated toys that spring to life. In a frantic attempt to save each other, the family battles bizarre, demonic toys threatening their lives.

Omi finally reveals her childhood trauma and the dark origins of their current misfortunes: the ancient spirit known as Krampus, who punishes those who forget the true spirit of Christmas. As Omi recounts her own story of losing hope during her youth, the family realizes they are trapped in a nightmare of their own making. Facing monstrous threats from gingerbread men to a terrifying Jack-in-the-Box, the family’s struggle for survival intensifies, leading them to confront Krampus himself.

In a dramatic climax, young Max must take responsibility for unleashing this malevolence. He confronts Krampus in a bid to save his sister, expressing remorse and longing for the Christmas spirit they once cherished. However, the encounter culminates in tragedy as he is forced to witness his sister’s fate, sealing their family’s grisly outcome with a haunting lesson on the importance of holiday togetherness and goodwill.

In a disorienting twist, Max awakens on Christmas Day with his family in a seemingly perfect mood. However, as they open presents together, the appearance of the Krampus bauble reveals the dark truth—the experience was far from a dream, hinting that they remain in the clutches of Krampus and his eternal watch. As the film ends, the sinister presence of their mischievous toys returns for one final chilling scare, leaving both characters and audience questioning the true nature of their holiday spirit.
