Kiss of the Spider Woman (re-release) (2001) – Full Plot Summary & Ending Explained

Read the complete plot breakdown of Kiss of the Spider Woman (re-release) (2001), including all key story events, major twists, and the ending explained in detail. Discover what really happened—and what it all means.

The film delves into a poignant exchange between two distinct characters sharing a prison cell in Brazil during the oppressive military dictatorship. Valentin Arregui, who endures the torment of imprisonment due to his involvement with a leftist revolutionary faction, finds himself incarcerated alongside Luis Molina, a gay man serving time for the crime of “corrupting an underage youth.”

To alleviate the unbearable weight of their reality, Molina often reminisces about a cherished film—a wartime romantic thriller steeped in Nazi propaganda. By intertwining the film’s characters into his storytelling, Molina seeks to provide comfort to Valentin, distracting him from the grim conditions of political captivity and the painful separation from his beloved, Marta. Through their interactions, Valentin attempts to instill a sense of self-respect in Molina, inspiring him to foster political awareness and commitment. Despite frequent friction stemming from Valentin’s disdain for Molina’s superficial engagement with film and unrealistic notions of romance, a deep and unexpected camaraderie blossoms between them.

As events unfold, the insidious truth comes to light: Valentin’s health is being undermined by poison administered by their captors, designed to facilitate Molina’s infiltration and informant role for the secret police. Molina has been promised a chance at parole in exchange for crucial information that might lead to the dismantling of Valentin’s revolutionary circle.

The bond between them culminates in an emotional confession when Molina finally admits his love for Valentin, culminating in a night of passion on Molina’s last evening behind bars. Soon thereafter, in a shocking twist, Molina is granted parole by the secret police. With a mixture of hope and trepidation, Valentin entrusts Molina with a telephone number and a message to relay to his comrades. Initially hesitant due to the grave implications of betrayal, Molina ultimately decides to take the number, sealing their farewell with a kiss.

Once out of prison, Molina attempts to reach out, arranging a clandestine meeting with the revolutionary group. However, unbeknownst to him, the secret police have been monitoring his every move. The meeting escalates into chaos when gunfire erupts, resulting in Molina being critically wounded. As he staggers through the streets, the secret police intercept him, demanding the crucial telephone number, but Molina defiantly refuses to divulge it and ultimately succumbs to his injuries. Acting on the police chief’s orders, the officers dispossess Molina’s body, discarding it unceremoniously while fabricating a narrative to conceal the true nature of his demise and his relationship with the revolutionary cause.

Meanwhile, Valentin’s suffering continues as he receives medical attention after enduring severe torture. A compassionate doctor, risking his own safety, administers morphine to ease Valentin’s pain. In a surreal moment blurring the lines between life and death, as Valentin teeters on the brink, he envisions himself escaping prison with Marta, eventually arriving on a breathtaking tropical island where they sail off together into a hopeful horizon.
