West Dallas wears a rough edge as a backdrop for a reckless plan. Chris Smith Emile Hirsch, a 22-year-old drug dealer, returns to the cluttered trailer park where his father, Ansel Thomas Haden Church, lives with his wife Sharla Gina Gershon. Chris has just been kicked out by his mother Adele, Ansel’s ex-wife, after she steals cocaine he was supposed to sell, leaving him desperate to pay a looming $6,000 debt to his supplier Digger Soames. The tension in the small family compound hums underneath the daily routine, and the air is thick with unspoken resentments and bad decisions waiting to happen.

Desperation drives a drastic plan. Chris and Ansel conjure a scheme to kill Adele, hoping to cash in on a $50,000 life insurance payout with Chris’s sister, Dottie Juno Temple as the beneficiary. Dottie gives a wary nod to the plan, and Chris arranges a meeting with Joe Cooper Matthew McConaughey, a police detective who moonlights as a contract killer. Before the meeting, Dottie confides an alarming detail: Adele once tried to kill her when she was an infant, a revelation that threads guilt and fear into the plot.

The money is tight, and Joe’s terms are steep. He demands $25,000 in advance, yet he’s intrigued by Dottie, who is described as developmentally disabled in the wake of the infant murder attempt, and he suggests taking her as a kind of “retainer” until the insurance payout comes through. Meanwhile, Digger’s biker henchmen corner Chris, beating him and threatening his life unless he settles his debt. Chris, shaken but stubborn, asks Joe to stop the hit and to avoid pursuing Dottie, only to discover that Adele is already dead—the body is dumped in a car and set on fire with Joe watching from the sidelines.

In the aftermath, the truth about the policy twists again. The beneficiary turns out to be Adele’s boyfriend Rex, not Dottie, a fact Chris only partially uncovers through Rex’s tangled web of influence. Rex’s involvement reveals that Chris was steered into hiring Joe by someone who knows too much about the money. Ansel, furious and feeling betrayed, tells Chris to end his life, a chilling moment that pushes Chris to press Dottie to run away with him to dodge Digger and Joe. Dottie agrees to consider escape, but only if she can first confront Joe.

After Adele’s funeral, the heat and paranoia intensify. Joe pulls Rex over in his car, and Chris buys a pistol on the black market. When Ansel and Sharla return home, they find Joe inside with Dottie, pressing for answers. Joe’s questions cut to the quick, and Sharla admits she knew the policy was actually for a much larger payout because accidental death would double the sum. Joe reveals a check for the larger amount payable to Rex and packs incriminating photos that prove Sharla’s affair with Rex. The confrontation grows uglier as Joe applies pressure, choking Sharla, punching her, and forcing her to simulate oral sex on a fried chicken leg, a moment that crystallizes the film’s brutal tone.

Joe’s grip tightens, and he warns that Ansel and Sharla won’t be protected if they refuse to cooperate. Chris arrives at the dining table with a gun drawn, while Joe declares that he and Dottie will marry. Chris objects, insisting that Dottie leave with him, but she rises and walks away as the two men shout at her. When Chris threatens Joe with his pistol, Sharla lunges with a steak knife, and a scuffle erupts as Ansel and Sharla rush to back up Joe. Dottie seizes the moment, recovering the gun and firing several shots that kill Chris and seriously wound Ansel. She then turns the weapon on Joe, revealing that she is pregnant. A spark of joy lights Joe’s face, and the scene ends on a razor’s edge as Dottie hesitates, finger hovering near the trigger.
