Khadgam (2002) – Full Plot Summary & Ending Explained

Koti, Ravi Teja, an aspiring actor who dreams of becoming a hero in the film industry but keeps getting shut out of studios, drifts between rejection and small gigs. He lives in a tight financial corner with his friend Murthy, Uttej, who shares the same dream of directing but meets the same walls at every turn. To make ends meet, Koti hovers at the edge of a break, taking a job as a junior artist while Murthy works as an assistant director, yet the rent on their cramped house in the old city has piled up for six long months. The landlord, M.S. Khaja, looms large, threatening them with arrest on a false theft accusation if they don’t cough up the money by evening. Their fear pushes them toward Amjed Bhai, a devout and outspoken Muslim auto driver who loves his country with a fierce, protective loyalty.

Amjed Bhai, Prakash Raj, is introduced as a true patriot who refuses to let communal tensions flare in his community. He once stopped a mob from torching a bus carrying Hindu pilgrims, saving lives and shielding strangers. He sees Koti as a brother and encourages him with unwavering faith, promising him a future as a big hero in cinema. Amjed Bhai also carries a forbidden love—a quiet romance with Zubeda, the daughter of M.S. Khaja—and he lives with his mother in the old city, haunted by the memory of a brother who died amid religious riots. It’s through Amjed Bhai’s heart and courage that Koti and Murthy keep hope alive, and he uses his wits to outsmart the landlord and keep them afloat.

Across the city, ACP Radhakrishna, Srikanth, stands as a hard-edged police officer with a deep-seated Islamophobic conviction: he believes that Muslims are terrorists and has devoted his life to catching Azar Khan. The pain behind his prejudice stems from a personal tragedy—his former lover was killed in a terrorist attack in Kashmir believed to tied to Azar Khan. When Azar arrives in Hyderabad, Radhakrishna makes it his mission to capture or kill him, no matter the cost.

The three men—Koti, Murthy, and Amjed Bhai—gradually collide with Captain, a sincere army officer and close ally to Radhakrishna. Captain, Brahmaji, has a wife who is Muslim, and their marriage is strengthened by Amjed Bhai’s help. Through Captain, Koti and Murthy begin to understand Radhakrishna’s skepticism, while Captain himself encourages the two hopefuls to pursue their dreams in cinema. Captain’s faith gives Koti a new sense of possibility, and Murthy gains a path to become a director, especially after a tense confrontation with a stubborn producer who finally agrees to hear their story.

As the story unfolds, Koti experiences a painful love setback and spirals into drink, until Amjed Bhai confronts him with brotherly honesty—to forget the heartbreak and commit to his craft. With Amjed Bhai’s guidance, Koti and Murthy push through a breakthrough moment: they compel a producer to listen to their pitch, and the project is set in motion. The film’s success would not only elevate Koti to stardom but also raise Murthy to prominence as a director.

A turning point arrives when Captain is called away for an emergency operation, leaving his pregnant wife in the care of Amjed Bhai and Radhakrishna. Captain urges Radhakrishna not to judge Amjed Bhai by his faith, insisting that he is different, yet Radhakrishna remains wary. In Captain’s absence, Radhakrishna expands his team to hunt Azar Khan, who is secretly Amjed Bhai’s younger brother. Azar asks his mother and Amjed Bhai to keep his true identity hidden, warning that any slip could cost him life. The family reluctantly agrees to maintain the cover.

Tragedy strikes when Captain is kidnapped and killed by men linked to a Pakistani faction. The loss ignites a swell of anger among the trio, who witness a group of Muslims burning an Indian flag and shouting “Pakistan Zindabad”—and they step in to defend their nation and its emblems.

A new complication arrives when Pooja, a friend and neighbor played by Kim Sharma, confesses her feelings to Radhakrishna. He is drawn in by her sincerity, even as Masood’s name surfaces in a dangerous chase. Azar, seeking Masood’s whereabouts, makes a bold move—he threatens educators and civilians, forcing Radhakrishna to race to a location where violence erupts. A tense confrontation unfolds: Azar kills a teammate, chases Radhakrishna into a mosque, and removes his shoes at the threshold, while Radhakrishna, blinded by fury, tries to enter with his shoes on. Amjed Bhai and the Muslim community intervene, sparing the sacred space from an escalation that could have erupted into tragedy. The clash leaves Radhakrishna furious and laying hand on those who tried to stop him.

Back on a film set, Koti, Murthy, and Pooja are drawn into Azar’s web when the terrorist appears among them. A gunfight erupts as Azar kidnaps Pooja and demands the release of Masood and Amjed Bhai, threatening mass violence if his terms aren’t met. Radhakrishna, Masood, and Amjed Bhai hurry to the station, while Azar forces Pooja to wear a bomb jacket and coerces Radhakrishna to surrender Masood and Amjed Bhai. In the ensuing chaos, Koti lands a decisive blow from behind, Amjed Bhai kills Masood, and Radhakrishna manages to defuse the bomb on Pooja and ultimately kills Azar.

In the final scene at the airport, Amjed Bhai and his mother prepare to depart for Mecca. Radhakrishna apologizes to Amjed Bhai’s mother for the loss of Azar, but Amjed Bhai clarifies that Azar was not his brother, and that the true bond—the one that endures—is the brotherhood between Radhakrishna and Koti. The film closes with a message about unity, resilience, and the power of chosen family to transcend divisions.
